Versatıle Mınerals For Targeted Toothpastes

VERSATILE MINERALS FOR TARGETED TOOTHPASTES

and meets special consumer needs for tailor-made applications. With about two billion people worldwide brushing their teeth daily, all wanting a perfect smile.

The market is highly competetive, the variety of product options is enormous and consumers are increasingly looking for holistic solutions that not only clean teeth but also offer added value.

The two most desired characteristics are healthy teeth surface and whiter appearance. It is vital that oral care manufacturers react quickly when it comes to developing products that consumers demand. Indeed, we are getting increasing number of enquiries from companies looking for help with toothpaste formulation.

Calcium carbonate is a multi-purpose ingredient that is creating versatile opportunities for sophisticated toothpaste applications. The ingredient is natural and compliant with stringent quality requirements. Particles offer both high chemical purity and controlled low microbiology.

Moreover, the ingredient is unique in fulfilling several requirements simultaneously. For manufacturers it enhances the formulation process, and for consumers it offers several health benefits.

Natural calcium carbonate acts as a gentle and effective cleaning particle, but also has the ability to buffer acidic pH, calcium ions are released in order to remineralise the enamel. Our natural calcium carbonates are marketed under the brand name Omyacere.

Nevertheless, the treatment of the raw material is crucial in obtaining optimum results for a tailored end product. As a global supplier, we have more than 130 years of expertise, with our key philosophy being investment in science and commitment ro R&D.

We developed proprietary technology to control particle dimensions and morphologies so that we have achieved a broad spectrum to fulfil different tasks. After intensive research, Omya developed a treatment, patented in 2014, that allows the creation of a new category of mineral particles with advanced functionality.

Thanks to a modified mineral structure, there are now multiple options for the combination of calcium carbonate and other additives for the design of targeted products. For oral care applications, Omyadent 100-OG is already available. Further specialities are currently being developed.

These particles act as highly efficient remineralisation agents as well as active carriers – for example, providing controlled release for flavours and antimicrobials. Omyadent particles have a core of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and a shell of hydroxyapatite (HAP).

HAP is the main constituent of human hard tissues such as bones, tooth enamel and dentin. The external surface of the treated minerals form a lamellar structure, while the core consists of an internal network of interconnected pores.

The two work together to improve the effectiveness of end products, and allow for an easier production process. Thanks to this composition, there is such a high reactivity with the mineral and tooth surface that enamel surface lesions can be effectively repaired.

The result is a whiter, smoother and cleaner tooth that attracts less dirt and plaque. Moreover, the particles help build a barrier on the exterior of teeth, and this has a greater resistance to acid attack than either natural or synthetically produced calcium carbonates.

A hard and smooth tooth surface has an additional cosmetic benefit: Teeth are less transculent and therefore look shinier and whiter.

remineralizasyon ajanı olarak kullanıldığında diğer formülleri geride bırakmıştır
*The reminerslisation performance of Omyadent 100-OG outperformed other
formulations, especially when used as the sole remineralisation aid.

Omya has documented several years of testing with external, highly experienced research laboratories and universities. Relevant research has been also published, either as posters or in oral presentations at scientific conferences.

The remineralisation performance, for example, is expressed as surface microhardness recovery (SMH). This measurement is related to different minerals, which make the enamel robust and hard, such as fluoride, calcium or HAP. To determine the parameters, a strict treatment protocol must be followed.

First, intact bovine enamel specimens are prepared and the original surface microhardness measured. Afterwards, these enamel specimens are demineralised under acidic conditions, and the SMH is measured again. Now, the remineralisation treatment stars:

The specimens are exposed to a toothpaste slurry containing the remineralisation agent four times a day, and are immersed for five minutes each time. They are then rinsed with deionised water and artificial saliva. Next, similar to real life circumstances, they undergo further demineralisation treatments.

This multi-level in vitro procedure is important to ensure that realistic conditions are mimicked, and to allow for comparison with in-vivo conditions. A final assessment is taken after six days. The increase of the SMH after te treatment on the demineralised enamel is calculated as a percentage.

We tested four different toothpaste mixtures : Along with 5% of the remineralisation agent, three of the tested toothpaste also contained the remineralisation source sodium fluoride. One toohpaste consisted only of 5% Omyadent 100-OG was free from fluoride.

This formula outperfomed the other products containing a nano-HAP and a dental grade micron size HAP. The results proved that the efficacy of this ingredient is higher when used as the sole remineralisation aid, compared to one which also has a second remineralisation source, such as sodium fluoride.

That may be because the two remineralisation sources compete, thus reducing efficacy. Further studies on this effect are on-going. Another customer demand, a desire for shiny white teeth, requires a hard and smooth tooth surface.
