Elemental Scientific's (ESI) prepFAST M5 automatic dilution system is now fully integrated with Agilent ICP-MS. The prepFAST M5 system provides automatic preparation of calibration standards, auto-dilution of samples, and complete automation of out-of-range QC and samples. US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Method 200.8. This long-established method is used for ICP-MS analysis of groundwater, surface water, drinking water, and wastewater. Laboratories are required to verify performance quality and conduct quality control (QC) testing. US EPA Method 6020A is a performance-based ICP-MS method. It covers 60 elements in various matrices. Sample types include groundwater, surface water, industrial waste, soils, sludges, sediments, and total waste (acid-leachable) for other materials. Laboratories generally require robust methodology and a powerful ICP-MS for these types of analyses, particularly because samples often contain high total dissolved solids (TDS) content.

ICP-MS for Elemental Purity Analysis in Pharmaceutical Substances According to USP <232> / <233> and ICH Q3D

New elemental purity analysis requirements were completed in February 2017 with new procedures for elemental (inorganic) impurities and materials in pharmaceutical products. Heavy metal analysis in the pharmaceutical industry has traditionally been performed using wet chemistry and colorimetric methods with <231> method. The method changed with European and US pharmacopeial conventions (USP). Requirements concerning heavy metal analysis in pharmaceuticals were issued as new standards by the International Council for Harmonisation (ICH) for human use. The ICH guideline will be defined in January 2018. USP <232> (Elemental Impurities – Limits) USP <233> (Elemental Impurities – Procedures) The Agilent 7800 ICP-MS instrument provides an aerodynamic solution for low-level analysis of elemental impurities in pharmaceutical products and raw materials. MassHunter software is suitable for 21 CFR Part 11.

Definition, Benefits of ICP-MSMS (QQQ), and Its Differences and Advantages Over All Other ICP-MS Systems

As shown in the image below, for ICP, LC, GC and all other instruments to have MSMS technology, or in other words, triple quadrupole (QQQ) capability, they must have two quadrupole mass filter analyzers. The technical name for MSMS is triple quadrupole (QQQ). 1. Quadrupole Mass Filter (Q1), 2. Quadrupole Collision/Reaction Cell (This cell can be Hexa (6) or Octa (8) pole with higher technology.), 3. Quadrupole Mass Filter (Q2). Some manufacturers lacking sufficient technology and lacking any R&D efforts in this direction have misled customers by claiming they offer MSMS (QQQ) while providing only MS to the global market. Particularly on the LC and GC side, MS and MSMS (QQQ) instruments have been longstanding technology at every manufacturer. However, MSMS (QQQ) technology is new in ICP. Consequently, manufacturers without MSMS (QQQ) production capacity in ICP are claiming that their MS systems are MSMS (QQQ) by simply renaming certain hardware components.

Arsenic Speciation

Arsenic, classified as one of the most dangerous substances globally, appears in drinking water, food, environmental conditions, and nearly every aspect of our lives. For example, scientists have observed that pregnant women who consume half a cup of cooked rice per day have a marked increase in arsenic levels in their urine. However, scientists have also identified arsenic in certain veterinary medications, such as those used to treat sick poultry. Currently, in nearly all sectors, laboratories are required by regulations to report arsenic as total content. In Europe and the United States, these distinctions (toxic/non-toxic) have become routine practice, particularly in the food sector. In coming years, many laboratories in Turkey will begin reporting arsenic not as total, but with its toxic and non-toxic species (AsIII, AsV, AsB, MMA, DMA, etc.). Our Agilent 7800 ICP-MS instrument is prepared for this work. Combined with our Agilent 1260 HPLC system, organometallic (heavy metal speciation) analysis can be performed.
