Vibrathane 7085: Lanxess's New-Generation Castable Polyurethane Raw Material
Raw-cast polyurethane material production using hot-casting polyurethane raw materials requires special preferences in raw material selection depending on product variety and/or the physical conditions of the environment in which the product will operate.
When requirements related to compression set values are paramount, TDI system raw materials are generally selected. The fact that TDI raw materials have a good track record in producing parts that compress and deform under load and recover to their original state after the load is removed is an important factor in these selections. Regarding resistance to cutting and tearing effects, MDI system raw materials have better credentials.
Achieving high cutting-tearing resistance simultaneously with low compression set values is quite difficult. These properties typically operate in inverse proportion to one another. When peak performance is desired in one property, it results in compromise on the other.
Adiprene and Vibrathane brands, which have a very long history in hot-cast polyurethane raw material production, are materials that have pioneered many innovations in the sector.
VIBRATHANE 7085, an MDI Ester-type raw material that LANXESS, the owner of these established brands, introduced in recent months, is one of the latest representatives of this innovation and tradition.
VIBRATHANE 7085 has cutting-tearing resistance over 3 times greater than conventional MDI Ester raw materials, which are considered to have quite good cutting-tearing resistance.
This improvement of over 200 percent in cutting-tearing resistance is simultaneously supported by very good compression set characteristics.
VIBRATHANE 7085 raw material provides 83–87 ShA hardness when cured with 1,4 BDO.
While compression set values for other conventional MDI Ester types at these hardness levels are around 40–44 percent, this value has dropped to 26 percent for the new-generation VIBRATHANE 7085. These values indicate that VIBRATHANE 7085 will deliver excellent results in environments requiring high resistance to cutting-tearing and/or high resistance to permanent deformation. VIBRATHANE 7085 can also be used in combination with VIBRACURE 5401 and VIBRACURE 2101 curatives. A hardness of 75 ShA can be obtained with VIBRACURE 5401, and 95 ShA hardness can be obtained with VIBRACURE 2101. The elastomers obtained at these hardness levels will be several steps ahead of other elastomers at the same hardness levels with their high cutting-tearing resistance and low compression set properties. As of the end of 2017, Kimsel has been distributing LANXESS polyurethane raw material systems. The ADIPRENE, VIBRATHANE and especially ROYALCAST raw materials, which are used in the manufacture of bowling balls, are produced with 65 years of experience and expertise. Kimsel's collaboration with LANXESS and its ongoing distribution activities enable companies in our country producing with hot-cast polyurethane raw material systems to procure state-of-the-art materials such as VIBRATHANE 7085.
