BASF and Porsche Partner to Develop High-Performance Lithium-Ion Battery for Electric Vehicles
BASF has been selected as the specialized cell-development partner for next-generation lithium-ion batteries by Cellforce Group, a joint venture between BASF, Porsche and Customcells. As part of the collaboration, BASF will supply high-energy HED™ NCM cathode active materials to contribute to high-performance battery cells for rapid charging and high energy density.
Cellforce Group, based in Tübingen, Germany, will manufacture the high-performance battery. The battery production facility is expected to commence operations in 2024 and supply power to 1,000 motorsports and high-performance vehicles annually with an initial capacity of at least 100 MWh.
As a global supplier of high-performance cathode active materials with a strong R&D network, BASF is ideally positioned to work with partners to contribute to a circular economy. With production facilities for advanced cathode active materials in Harjavalta, Finland, and cathode active materials in Schwarzheide, Germany, BASF can supply battery materials with an outstanding sustainability record for responsible and reliable raw material sourcing targeting the lowest environmental impact. Lithium, nickel, cobalt and manganese will be recycled in a hydrometallurgical process and reintegrated into BASF's cathode active materials production process.
