Sweden's AIR Project to Cut Carbon Emissions by Up to Half a Million Tons Annually

The Swedish Project AIR is an industrial concept for producing methanol from diverse recovered end-of-life streams and hydrogen from electrolysis. Under the leadership of the Perstorp chemical group in collaboration with Uniper and Fortum, the project aims to reduce carbon emissions by up to half a million tonnes annually. Approximately EUR 30 million has currently been allocated to Project Air by the Swedish Energy Agency. Project AIR will demonstrate an extremely innovative, integrated process concept for low-carbon, renewable and circular methanol production in Europe's energy-intensive chemicals sector. Methanol is one of the most important raw materials for the chemical industry, and to date there has been no competitive sustainable methanol source on the market. The plan is to establish the first-of-its-kind, large-scale, commercial, sustainable methanol facility using a Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) process to convert CO₂, residual streams, renewable hydrogen and biomethane into methanol. Renewable hydrogen will be produced in a new electrolysis facility that will be the world's largest hydrogen electrolyzer unit established for production in the chemicals sector. Earlier this year in March, Project Air was approved for the next evaluation level under the EU Innovation Fund, one of the world's largest financing programmes for demonstrating innovative low-carbon technologies. And last week, the project achieved another success when the Swedish Energy Agency awarded it approximately EUR 30 million in grants.
