Project Work Completed for 5 More Logistics Centers for Rail Transport

Turkey's transformation into a regional logistics hub at the centre of transport corridors is being pursued through initiatives led by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure and the Turkish Railways General Directorate.

Within this framework, work continues on the construction of logistics centres to increase the competitiveness of Turkish manufacturers by transporting cargo by rail. Upon completion of the 25 planned logistics centres, the sector will gain an additional 75.2 million tonnes and 4.1 million TEU transport capacity, along with 19.9 million square metres of container stock and handling areas. In this context, 2 new logistics centres were put into service for the sector in 2020. The Konya Kayacık Logistics Centre, built on a total area of 1 million square metres approximately 25 kilometres from Konya city centre with an annual capacity of 1.7 million tonnes, and the Mersin (Yenice) Logistics Centre have brought the total number of operational logistics centres to 11 to date. Meanwhile, construction of the Kars Logistics Centre has been completed and final preparations for opening are underway. While construction work continues on logistics centres to be established in İzmir Kemalpaşa and Sivas, project work has been completed for 5 logistics centres to be built in Bilecik (Bozüyük), Kayseri (Boğazköprü), Karaman, Bitlis (Tatvan) and Çerkezköy (Tekirdağ).

Feasibility studies and planning work continue for the Mardin, Habur, Istanbul (European Side), Çandarlı, Filyos and İyidere/Infrastructure Investments General Directorate (AYGM) logistics centres. With these efforts, Turkey's number of logistics centres will rise to 25.

A research project conducted by TÜBİTAK's Turkish Institute of Industrial Guidance and Management (TÜSSİDE) on the operating model of logistics centres has also been completed, and the cargo potential of the logistics centres has been determined. In the second phase of the project, work continues on determining prioritisation and operating models.
