Correct Energy Consumption Key to Energy Efficiency

Ali İhsan Sılkım, General Director of the Energy Efficiency Association; stated "With rapid growth in global population and expanding industrialisation, alongside increasing demand for energy, consumption of natural resources is also accelerating." Sılkım, explaining that energy efficiency can generally be described as using new technologies, implementing procedures established for efficiency, and using energy more effectively while considering social living standards, emphasised that energy efficiency awareness must be instilled in the entire society within the scope of energy supply security and sustainable development mobilisation. Recalling that for these principles being promoted to consumers in Turkey, the "Public Opinion Energy Efficiency Awareness Index" value was determined as 157.7 in 2019, calculated based on knowledge and behavioural dimensions by the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources and associations, Sılkım continued as follows: "This rate is calculated with 50% 'Knowledge Index' and 50% 'Behaviour Index' weighting. According to the 'Public Opinion Energy Efficiency Awareness Index' calculated as 157.7 in 2019, our public has developed mid-to-upper level awareness on the subject of 'energy efficiency'. The conversion rates of knowledge into behaviour were determined as 54.3% in lighting-related matters, 53.7% in building insulation practices, 57.2% in heating and cooling-related matters, an average of 64.3% in the use of electrical appliances and white goods equipment, and 70.9% in transport-related matters concerning vehicle owners and users. Awareness-to-behaviour conversion rates show the highest contribution in the transport sector. Unnecessary or incorrect energy consumption, global warming, soil degradation, and thinning of the ozone layer as a result of excessive greenhouse gas emissions bring along many problems. In addition to using clean energy sources in energy production, correct energy consumption also gains importance for energy efficiency," he said.
