Harvard Sabri Ülker Center Achieves Another New Discovery
The research team at Harvard Sabri Ülker Metabolic Research Center has discovered a new function of the Nrf1 molecule, which they have termed a "metabolic guardian."
Nrf1 Governs Waste Management Mechanisms
The development of new preventive and therapeutic options for chronic metabolic diseases such as obesity and diabetes depends on identifying mechanisms that protect cells from metabolic stress.
Reinforcing and regulating metabolic balance through these mechanisms offers the prospect of effectively preventing and treating multiple health problems simultaneously.
Sabri Ülker Center Director Prof. Dr. Gökhan Hotamışlıgil's research team, working within this framework, first discovered that protein waste elimination plays the most critical role in preserving and maintaining the function of brown adipose tissue, and subsequently found that the manager of this mechanism is the Nrf1 molecule.
Brown Adipose Tissue Can Consume More Than Half of Circulating Sugars and Fats
Brown adipose tissue, whose known function in mammals is to convert energy into heat when exposed to cold, consumes high levels of energy and nutrients in doing so. In fact, when this small tissue is activated, it can consume and draw from the system more than half of the circulating sugars and fats.
However, during this process, protein waste accumulates in brown adipose tissue causing damage. Like a machine operating at maximum intensity, this tissue requires cellular maintenance and the elimination of toxic waste to carry out its function.
Brown Adipose Tissue Possesses Remarkable Therapeutic Potential
Dr. Alexander Bartelt, who serves as a postdoctoral researcher at the Sabri Ülker Center and the Department of Genetics and Complex Diseases and leads the project, noted that brown adipose tissue has a fascinating biological structure and extraordinary therapeutic potential, stating "However, it was not known what tools could be used to manage the stress that arises from the waste generated during this powerful energy consumption and to sustain its function."
Prof. Dr. Hotamışlıgil, the lead author of the study, said "We were determined to find the special arrangement that brown adipose cells use to solve their capacity problem and enable them to function," emphasizing that the Sabri Ülker Center research team has revealed that brown adipose tissue's game is managed by a mechanism known as the "proteasome," which is responsible for protein degradation.
