TİM Announces May Export Data
Turkey's export sector achieved a historic performance in May, setting a new record. May exports reached USD 19 billion, representing a 15% increase compared to the same month last year. With this figure, Turkey achieved the highest May export volume in its republican history, marking the 19th monthly record out of the past 21 months.
The Turkish Exporters Assembly (TİM) announced May foreign trade data at a meeting held in Ankara with the participation of Commerce Minister Mehmet Muş. Turkey's May exports increased by 15% compared to the same month of the previous year, reaching USD 19 billion.
According to the announced data, Turkey's export sector, which serves as the field force of the country's economy and trade diplomacy, closed May with a record, as it did in the first 4 months of the year. With May exports of USD 19 billion achieved by the export sector, the highest May export volume in the country's republican history was reached.
Export Record Broken for 5 Consecutive Months
At the "May 2022 Foreign Trade Figures Press Release" meeting, TİM Chairman İsmail Gülle announced May foreign trade data to the public, stating: "In the 5th month of the year, we are pleased to continue the streak and break the export record without interruption. In May, our export sector achieved a historic performance, reaching USD 19 billion in exports with a 15% increase. With this figure, we managed to reach the highest May export volume. Thus, the monthly record was set in 19 out of the past 21 months. Our 12-month exports approached USD 243 billion. Our leading projections indicate that we will reach our year-end export target of USD 250 billion before the year ends. I congratulate the entire export sector on this outstanding performance."
Chemicals Sector Leads Total Exports
TİM Chairman Gülle stated that 15 sectors increased their exports in May and ranked the leading export sectors as follows: This month, the Chemicals sector, maintaining its strong performance with USD 2.8 billion, again ranked first, while the Automotive sector, reaching USD 2.3 billion, ranked second and the Steel sector, achieving USD 1.9 billion in exports, ranked third.
Noting that other notable increases occurred in the Cereals, Ferrous and Non-ferrous Metals, and Cement sectors, TİM Chairman Gülle stated: "These successes recorded in different sectors are a clear indication that Turkey is mobilized for comprehensive production and export efforts."
Regarding exports by country groups, TİM Chairman Gülle noted that exports to the European Union increased by 17%, reaching USD 8 billion, and stated: "The EU's share in our exports is 42%. When we also include other European countries outside the EU, the share of the European continent in our May exports exceeded 55%. In other country groups, we achieved exports of USD 3.2 billion to Middle East and Near East countries, USD 2 billion to Africa, USD 1.4 billion to North America, and USD 1.3 billion to Far East countries."
