TÜBA and TÜBİTAK Science Awards Announced Winners

TÜBA and TÜBİTAK Science Awards were presented to their recipients at a ceremony held at the Presidential Complex. Turkey Academy of Sciences (TÜBA) President Prof. Dr. Muzaffer Şeker, in his remarks at the awards ceremony, congratulated the recipients while emphasizing that Turkish scientists' work has brought the country closer to its future targets. Pointing to an extraordinary period caused by the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Şeker said that even the world's major economies struggled to manage the pandemic's negative economic, commercial, psychological and sociological effects.

Şeker stressed that the health investments made in Turkey in the past and the comprehensive social security system demonstrated their necessity, and continued as follows:

"It makes us happy to see that measures taken with state guarantees have enabled all segments of our society to overcome this period with less impact compared to other countries. Under the leadership of our President, guided by science and our scientists, and through the dedicated efforts of our healthcare workers, we hope to overcome this difficult period in the shortest time and with the least damage." he said.

TÜBİTAK awards

Following the remarks, TÜBİTAK and TÜBA Science Awards were presented to their recipients by President Erdoğan. TÜBİTAK 2020 Science Award recipients were Prof. Dr. Mustafa Soylak and Prof. Dr. İsmail Türkan in basic sciences, Prof. Dr. Özgür Barış Akan and Prof. Dr. Hilmi Volkan Demir in engineering sciences, while Prof. Dr. Cengiz Sinan Özkan received the TÜBİTAK Special Award. Incentive Award recipients were Dr. Öğr. Üyesi Bilge Baytekin and Dr. Öğr. Üyesi Ferdi Karadaş in basic sciences, Prof. Dr. Sinem Çöleri, Doç. Dr. Mustafa Evren Erşahin, Doç. Dr. Mustafa Serdar Önses, Prof. Dr. Hakan Usta in engineering sciences, Prof. Dr. Elif Çadırcı, Doç. Dr. Aydan Dağ, Doç. Dr. Tevfik Tamer Önder in health sciences, and Dr. Öğr. Üyesi Selim Erdem Aytaç, Prof. Dr. Mehmet Efe Biresselioğlu, Doç. Dr. Emre Selçuk, Dr. Öğr. Üyesi Gaye Soley in social sciences.

TÜBA awards

Under the Scientific Intellectual Works Program (TESEP), Doç. Dr. Evren Küçük and Fatma Betül Altıntaş were deemed worthy of honorable mention, while Prof. Dr. Alp Can in health and life sciences, Doç. Dr. Ersin Erdoğan and Prof. Dr. Altay Tayfun Özcan in social sciences received awards. Ar. Gör. Kübra Fettahoğlu received the Fuat Sezgin Special Award, and Dr. Ömer Gezer received the Halil İnalcık Special Award. TÜBA Outstanding Early Career Scientist (GEBİP) Awards were given to Doç. Dr. Serdar Akbayrak, Doç. Dr. Yaşar Akdoğan, Dr. Ghaith Makey, Dr. Korhan Özkan and Doç. Dr. Rifat Onur Umucalılar in natural sciences, Doç. Dr. Abdullah Aksu, Doç. Dr. Kamil Boratay Alıcı, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Can Altunışık, Prof. Dr. Necip Atar, Dr. Ayşegül Doğan, Doç. Dr. Ozan Erdinç, Doç. Dr. Aysel Kantürk Figen, Prof. Dr. Yusuf Kaynak, Dr. Savaş Taşoğlu and Doç. Hallaq in the social and humanities sciences category, Prof. Dr. Murat Günel in the health and life sciences category, and Prof. Dr. Erik Jeppesen and Prof. Dr. Okyay Kaynak in the natural and engineering sciences category.   Source
