Petrol Ofisi Group Commits to Net Zero

Petrol Ofisi Group's Net Zero Commitment Petrol Ofisi Group committed to reducing emissions by 42 percent by 2030 and achieving carbon net zero in 2050. Turkey, having shared its Nationally Determined Contribution under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change with the international public, committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 41 percent by 2030 and achieving net zero by 2053. In line with these targets, Petrol Ofisi, one of the country's largest energy infrastructure groups, has accelerated its work within its net zero strategy. In this context, Petrol Ofisi Group committed to reducing Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 42 percent by 2030 and achieving net zero by 2050. Mehmet Abbasoğlu, Chief Executive Officer of Petrol Ofisi Group, emphasized that work toward decarbonization is among the most important preconditions of investment consciousness for the future: "The energy sector is one of the most critical players in achieving net zero targets. As Petrol Ofisi Group, we are aware of our responsibility. The net zero target we committed to for 2050 is a natural extension of our social investment philosophy. In every step we take, we consider environmental, social and governance conditions—in other words, ESG criteria—and we proceed absolutely with a multi-stakeholder engagement strategy. We have primarily focused on reducing our direct emissions from sources we own and control, as well as our indirect emissions caused through our purchases. Within this framework, we have accelerated our work at our terminals, aviation units, mineral oil refinery, head office and fuel stations. In the context of foreign trade relations, we proceed with a system advancing in three main areas: in the distribution of conventional, transitional and sustainable energy products, we have directed our course toward transitional and sustainable energy. In transitional energy, we are increasing sales and production of LPG, LNG and biodiesel, while in sustainable energy, we are expanding hydrogen, solar, electricity and sustainable aviation fuel sales and production. Our target is to achieve production and sales of 3 million tons of oil equivalent in transitional energy and 1.6 million tons of oil equivalent in sustainable energy products by 2030. Every step we take toward our net zero target is not only for our company and sector, but also a step toward our country's long-term goal of reaching net zero by 2053. We will continue unabated our investments and collaborations that will lead in the sectors in which we operate and provide genuine added value to the future of the country's economy." Since 2017, Petrol Ofisi Group has taken important steps in terms of sustainability. Some of the significant steps it has taken in line with its net zero carbon emissions strategy are as follows:

Reducing carbon footprint by installing solar panels

Petrol Ofisi is also reducing its carbon footprint by installing solar panels at all of its owned stations, on the roof of its mineral oil refinery, and on the grounds of its terminals. The solar-powered station project that began in 2019 with Paşalılar Petrol in Bodrum, Muğla continues with 13 stations. The Petrol Ofisi stations within the project not only meet nearly all of their electricity needs from solar energy but also supply excess energy to the grid. With the system at these 13 stations participating in the s-POwer project, over 800 tons of carbon emissions are prevented annually.

Increasing sustainability contribution to aviation sector

In addition to all these efforts, Petrol Ofisi, as a member of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), also supports sustainable aviation in line with the association's decision on "Net Zero Carbon Emissions by 2050." Since March 2022, the company has been supplying leading airlines with sustainable aviation fuel Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel™ (SAF) that reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80 percent. Petrol Ofisi Group aims to increase the volume of SAF it currently supplies from İzmir Adnan Menderes and Ankara Esenboğa airports by three times in 2023 and by 10 times in 2024. SAF, produced from 100 percent renewable waste and waste raw materials such as cooking oil and animal fat waste, can be used in aircraft engines or fuel infrastructure without requiring any modifications.

Preventing potential leaks from reaching the environment through control

Petrol Ofisi manages potential hydrocarbon releases and ensures oily water is collected through channels via its "Oily Water - Rainwater Management Procedure." This way, any leaks that may occur are controlled and collected before reaching the environment. In line with this target, having completed infrastructure requirements, Petrol Ofisi connects all oily water systems to an API separator equipped with skimmers and hydrocarbon sensors. Oil separated in the separator is sent to the oil slop tank, while the oily water separator outlet is directed to wastewater treatment units. All rainwater outlet sumps are equipped with hydrocarbon sensors and motor-operated valves. When oil is detected, outlets are closed and an alarm is triggered. On the other hand, the company completed its IMO 2020 preparations early within the framework of global sustainability criteria, and Petrol Ofisi realized Turkey's first VLSFO supply in October 2019 together with Turkey's first and only Maritime Fuel Quality and Quantity Assurance System.

Award-Winning Environmentally Friendly Packaging Production

Petrol Ofisi, which attaches importance to the environmental friendliness of the products it developed to contribute to Turkey's net zero target, has V/Max fuels with Active-3 technology that, with their special formulations, clean and protect the engine, provide fuel savings and deliver ecological and economic gains in parallel with all their features. In addition, the new engine oil technology Adaptech, developed at Petrol Ofisi Technology Center (POTEM), provides 100 percent adaptation to all conditions while protecting the engine. The new packaging of Maxima products using this technology is produced from 25 percent recycled plastic materials. Due to these new packages Petrol Ofisi uses in its Maxima engine oil products, the company was recently recognized as a "Low Carbon Champion" by the Sustainable Production and Consumption Association (SÜT-D) at the 8th Istanbul Carbon Summit.

Expanding charging station network across Turkey

As Petrol Ofisi Group continues its infrastructure work to reach its net zero target, it is also expanding its e-POwer charging station network to address the charging and range problems that are the biggest challenges for electric vehicles. Developed as a completely unique and original brand from design to structure, e-POwer stations enable electric vehicles stuck in city traffic to travel on intercity roads. Currently, 50 e-Power stations are in the installation phase. As a result of all these efforts, Petrol Ofisi Group was also awarded a silver medal by EcoVadis, a corporate sustainability rating organization that evaluates thousands of companies worldwide.
