Since its foundation in 1894 by Ludwig Beeck in Breslau, the development and production of potassium silicate-based mineral paints that form inseparable bonds with substrates through active silification has been Beeck's mission. Once created, this micro-porous mineral coating cannot be separated from the substrate, and the benefits of its use both inside and outside buildings are particularly crucial in the preservation of valuable historical monuments. The formulation, used for its remarkable durability in protecting historical heritage and the beauty it emphasizes through impressive colours, has remained essentially the same. The silicon-oxygen bonds that active silicate paints form with substrates are too strong to be broken by the sun's UV rays, and since the colorants used are entirely mineral-based, colours do not fade in sunlight. The permanence of colours depends on the pigments and the binder. Mineral colorants and silicate binders are never affected by the destructive effects of UV radiation. If you are looking for a coating that can last for very many years (with examples standing in place for over a century), whose colours never fade (A1) and which never restricts the walls' breathing capability (Sd value <0.02 m), thus never obstructing the passage of water vapour out of or its reverse movement, silicate-based paints are the ideal choice. In the 1950s-1960s, with cheaper synthetic-based paints spreading rapidly in the market, the use of mineral paints declined significantly and production was nearly abandoned and forgotten. When it became apparent that structural damage caused by synthetic resin coatings incorrectly applied over porous mineral building materials was increasing, the importance of selecting appropriate paint became clear. Beeck's active silicate paints do not form a film layer like synthetic-based paints; they create a durable, stone-like structure chemically bonded and fused with the substrate, with fine capillary pores. Resistant to all natural conditions such as rain, snow, storms and frost, never peeling or flaking, not fading in sunlight, and with fire-resistant properties, these paints meet the highest expected standards with their impressively matte appearance, which is as effective as the substrate they are applied to.
In addition to the preservation of ancestral buildings, high-quality silicate paints are now sought after for the permanent colouring and preservation of concrete, brick or other mineral facades in newly created structures.
In terms of building physics, the value of ideal open porosity is very important; thanks to silification, it becomes inseparable from the plastered surface; it does not create a tight, high-stress shell that can be shed. These open pores provide a balanced, healthy living environment indoors. High alkalinity (pH 11) provides resistance to mould and fungi. Air free of all solvents, plasticisers, protective chemicals and biocides meets the highest hygienic standards. Beeck's extensive primer range enables silicate paints to be used even on substrates with weak silification. In addition to the unique way registered historical buildings are revitalized with their characteristic colours in accordance with the spirit of the times wherever they are applied, the ambiance created by silicate paints with their matte appearance is unique even in modern settings. In other paints, pigments that provide colour are trapped within the resin. The resin wraps the pigment in a film, altering the original colour. Whereas in silicate paints, the coloring substances are contained in transparent silicate like water and reflect their own vibrant colours. They require maintenance only at very long intervals and are very simple to maintain, protect the applied surface and help preserve the property's value. They keep it clean. Surfaces do not become dirty only from materials that accumulate on them; synthetic materials are charged with static electricity by the wind and collect dirt on their surfaces. Plastic coatings soften and become sticky in heat. Beeck silicate paints are safe, unaffected by fire and do not contribute to fire spread. They do not break down in fire and release toxic gases. They are the only paint that can be safely used in shared spaces such as subways, tunnels and schools. The absence of any organic matter such as solvents, plasticisers, preservatives or fungicides in its composition, and the fact that it places no burden on the environment from manufacture to final disposal, and requires no removal during maintenance, makes silicate paint the most environmentally respectful paint.

Economic Efficiency

The cheerful character of pure mineral pigmentation, its colour variations and light fastness enhance the status of every building for years to come. The unique durability of Beeck Mineral Paints makes product use easy to maintain and consequently economical.

Building Physics

Capillary-active coatings have ideal levels of open porosity and are therefore extremely valuable under building physics conditions. Thanks to silification, the coating and plaster form an inseparable mineral bond, they do not peel, when repainted and renewed at the same time they do not impede vapour transmission and do not create a high-stress shell. This porosity also provides a balanced, healthy sitting room environment. The high alkalinity of the coatings is resistant to mould and has a bactericidal effect. Free of solvents, plasticisers, biocides and protective substances, they meet the most demanding indoor air hygiene requirements.

Renewal

The advantage of mineral coatings is not only that they can be used on traditional building materials but also on composite materials and lightweight structural components. For substratum layers with weak silification properties, various primers have also been developed.

Aesthetics

Aesthetically, matte coatings are irresistibly attractive. Traditional coating products such as lime wash paints are compatible with historically valuable wall cladding materials such as lime plaster, hair, adobe and natural stone. It is associated with restoration and historic building painting and imparts a very special character to every registered building. As the Turkish distributor of Beeck Paints imported from Germany, Uzertaş Boya Sanayi Tic. ve Yatırım A.Ş. continues to serve for 10 years with our experienced teams in all your silicate system projects.

Gründerzeithaus Leopoldstraße 153 in Munich Subject:

The aim was to completely redesign the colour finish of the front facade of this "Wilhelminian style" building. Examination of the old coating showed that organic-bonded multi-layer film-forming coatings had been applied to the mineral facade cladding, causing building physics constraints. The surfaces were heavily soiled due to thermoplastic effects and contained excessive fine capillary cracks.

The following criteria were used to define the objectives of the new colour coating:

• The old multi-layer organic coating was completely removed from the facade using paint strippers. • A coating system was identified with high abrasion resistance and long service life, high water vapour permeability and definite mattness and mineral properties. • By creating sample areas, an appropriate paint system and colour were found that eliminated the capillary crack problem with suitable products. The Beeck consultant reviewed the results and proceeded to further stages in the finished areas. Field work was continuously monitored and documented in relation to the specified products and technology.

Products Used:

• Removal of limey deposits on the surface with BEECK Etching Fluid, • Priming with BEECK Fixative, • Filling and repair with BEECK Quarz Filler, • Final coat painting with Beeckosil Fine. R. Cüneyt Saraç / Chemical Engineer / Technical Director / Uzertaş Boya Sanayi Ticaret ve Yatırım A.Ş.
