Nutrition, Health and Sustainable Living area global science-based company Royal DSM announced that its Engineering Materials division will offer the current Akulon® PA6 portfolio produced in Europe with significantly reduced carbon footprint by early 2021, thereby having the lowest PA6 carbon footprint available on the market. This will enable DSM customers to reduce the carbon footprint of their own products and contribute to the global reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

Akulon® Polyamide 6 is a thermoplastic material with high heat resistance. It is widely used in various applications such as automotive, electrical equipment, electronic devices and packaging.

DSM Engineering Materials, halving the carbon footprint of the Akulon® PA6 portfolio, is taking the next step in line with DSM's purpose-driven, performance-focused strategy on its sustainability journey. The reduction is a result of close collaboration in the value chain with Fibrant / Highsun, which provides key building blocks for Akulon® PA6 and has launched an ambitious emissions reduction programme in the Netherlands to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions in production processes.

CO2REDUCE Program

The reduction of Akulon®'s carbon footprint strongly contributes to DSM's 'CO2REDUCE programme' related to Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions targets and reduces value chain emissions per ton of product produced by 28% by 2030.

Joost d'Hooghe, Vice President of DSM Engineering Materials Business Lines: "At DSM, I am proud to take an ambitious step and lead the global sector. By offering our customers lower carbon footprint PA6 alternatives to our existing portfolio, we enable them to reduce greenhouse gas emissions of their own products."

Shruti Singhal, Head of DSM Engineering Materials added: "We have a long history of delivering concrete proof points of our sustainability commitment. As a next step, we will further reduce our footprint through a mass balance approach in bio-based raw materials. Together with our customers, suppliers and partners, we are ready to advance our industry, capture sustainable opportunities ahead and fulfill our purpose of creating brighter lives for everyone."
