Chemical Industry Exports Rise to Second Place in June
According to data from the Istanbul Chemical Substances and Products Exporters Association (İKMİB), chemical exports in June increased 12.34% compared to June 2017, reaching USD 1 billion 424 million and making the sector the second-largest exporting sector.
In the ranking of countries with the highest exports in June, Egypt recorded USD 99 million 95 thousand, the United States USD 92 million 712 thousand, and Germany USD 77 million 655 thousand in chemical exports, placing them in the top three.
Turkey's chemical industry, which ranks as the country's third-largest exporting sector, moved to second place after automotive in June exports. With Egypt, the United States and Germany leading in chemical exports in June, the sector's June exports totaled USD 1 billion 424 million.
Egypt and United States Lead June Chemical Exports
Egypt became the country receiving the most chemical exports in June. Chemical exports to Egypt stood at USD 70 million 259 thousand in June 2017, rising 41.04% to USD 99 million 95 thousand in June 2018. While most sectors experienced losses in June, chemical exports to the United States increased 30.81% compared to the same month last year, reaching USD 92 million 712 thousand. Other countries in the sector's top ten exports after the United States were Germany, Greece, Iraq, Italy, United Kingdom, China, Romania and India.Plastics and Products Lead Chemical Sub-sector Exports
In sub-sectors, plastics and products exports continue to drive chemical sector exports. Plastics and products recorded the highest exports in June with USD 484 million 96 thousand 238, ranking first. Mineral fuels, oils and products ranked second with USD 256 million 248 thousand 844 in exports, while inorganic chemicals exports stood third with USD 160 million 389 thousand 118. Following inorganic chemicals, other sectors in the top ten were rubber and rubber products, pharmaceutical products, paints, varnishes, inks and preparations, essential oils and cosmetics, soaps and washing preparations, organic chemicals and miscellaneous chemical substances. Looking at the sector's six-month export performance, exports in the January-June period reached USD 8 billion 431 million, a 6.38% increase compared to the same period in 2017. The countries with the highest exports during this period were Germany, United States, Egypt, Spain, Iraq, Italy, United Kingdom, Netherlands, Greece and Iran. Evaluating the chemical sector's June performance, İKMİB Board Chairman Adil Pelister stated: "Exports from Turkey's chemical industry, one of the country's most important sectors, continue to grow.Chemical sector exports reached USD 1 billion 424 million in June 2018, a 12.34% increase compared to June 2017, achieving second place among Turkey's largest exporting sectors. We see that the increase in our exports to the United States, China and India has contributed to this remarkable development.
While most sectors experienced losses in June, chemical exports to the United States increased 30.81% compared to the same month last year, ranking second after Egypt. If we rank the countries to which we made the highest chemical exports in June, they are Egypt, United States, Germany, Greece, Iraq, Italy, United Kingdom, China, Romania and India. Another noteworthy factor here is that our sector's exports to Greece have nearly doubled.
