Knauf Interfer and Hydnum Steel Sign €80 Million Green Steel Deal

Taking an important step towards sustainability in the steel industry, Hydnum Steel signed a collaboration agreement with Knauf Interfer regarding green steel supply.

In response to growing demand for sustainable industrial solutions with minimal environmental impact, Hydnum Steel, the Iberian Peninsula's first green steel facility, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Knauf Interfer, a leading European steel processing and distribution company. This partnership is designed to expand the availability of zero-emission green steel across Europe and strengthen commitment to sustainability in the steel industry.

Through this collaboration, Hydnum Steel will supply Knauf Interfer with approximately EUR 80 million worth of green steel annually. The two companies will work together to create a more efficient and environmentally friendly value chain. One of the key elements of the agreement is the development of a green steel supply network leveraging Knauf Interfer's advanced production and supply chain management platform. This system will revolve around a trimodal hub located in Duisburg, Germany, which holds an important inland port position. The Duisburg hub will provide optimized logistics by delivering efficient and sustainable shipments to customers in Central Europe.

The partnership also aims to expand into the steel product processing area, where Knauf Interfer will provide additional services such as cutting, segmentation and rewinding tailored to the specific needs of Hydnum Steel's customers. A notable feature of the collaboration is the transparency regarding the steel's CO2 footprint, which will be communicated to customers using Knauf Interfer's straightforward Environmental Product Declaration (EPD)-based approach.

In line with their shared commitment to sustainability, Hydnum Steel and Knauf Interfer also plan to establish a circular economy system for scrap metal recycling. This innovative initiative will enable scrap metal generated in Knauf Interfer's network to be recycled at Hydnum Steel's Puertollano facility. This approach will close the production cycle and encourage a complete circular economy, further enhancing the sustainability of their operations.

By combining their strengths, Hydnum Steel and Knauf Interfer aim to significantly reduce carbon emissions in the steel industry and manage the transition to a more sustainable future. Their partnership represents an important step forward in green steel distribution and the implementation of environmentally conscious industrial applications across Europe.

Based in Duisburg, Knauf Interfer is a leading independent service provider, processor and distributor for steel and aluminium mills across Europe. With comprehensive experience, the company has established a solid international supplier network offering diverse products, including both standard and special steel and aluminium grades and sizes. Its decentralized structure enables rapid decision-making and efficient service delivery, all supported by advanced technologies and a highly skilled workforce.
