The Sustainable Production and Consumption Association (SÜT-D), with support from the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization, will organize the Istanbul Carbon Summit for the sixth time this year to halt the 1.5-degree warming of our planet through effective carbon management and to discuss what needs to be done for Turkey's progress in the green economy. The Summit, to be held on 9 April 2019 at Istanbul Technical University's certified green campus, will focus on carbon trading and combating climate change. Emphasizing that the climate change crisis is no longer a distant threat, Istanbul Technical University Faculty Member and SÜT-D Chairman Prof. Dr. Filiz Karaosmanoğlu stated: "Reducing greenhouse gases that cause climate change in line with industry growth is not a dilemma. Our industry can develop in a climate-friendly manner. Resource efficiency, energy efficiency, renewable energy sources and waste management are our powerful tools for this. We can reduce greenhouse gases and manage our carbon. The buying and selling of carbon has led to the emergence of a new trading area, the emissions trading system. Our country should take its share from the carbon market. For this purpose, as SÜT-D, we will put carbon trading on the agenda with international experts within the scope of this year's Summit."
Prof. Dr. Karaosmanoğlu announced that a record number of applications were received for this year's Low Carbon Hero Awards, stating that they aim to reward those who support the fight against climate change by reducing their carbon footprint and to publicize exemplary work to a wider audience.
Noting that this year's SÜT-D Small Carbon Heroes will attract great interest, Karaosmanoğlu emphasized that the children will present a beautiful surprise show drawing attention to climate change. The Istanbul Carbon Summit will bring together representatives from the energy and waste sectors, as well as chemistry, iron and steel, cement, retail chains, food, electrical and electronic goods, banking and finance sectors, along with government officials, local authorities, academia, young people and civil society representatives. Executives from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), International Emissions Trading Association (IETA), Turkish Industrial Development Bank (TSKB) and Iş Bank will present the topic of "Climate Finance and Carbon Markets." At the Summit, which is expected to be attended by Deputy Minister of Environment and Urbanization and Chief Climate Change Negotiator Prof. Dr. Mehmet Emin Birpınar and Director General of Environmental Management Muhammet Ecel, executives will present their achievements in carbon management in the "Carbon Management and Industry" session.
