Mining Sector Scholarships for High-Achieving Youth The mining sector is offering scholarships equal to the minimum wage to high-achieving youth who choose mining, geology, geophysics, or ore preparation engineering. Over 3 million young people who sat university entrance exams this year entered the selection process following the announcement of test results. The mining sector, calling high-achieving youth to choose one of mining, geology, geophysics, or ore preparation engineering with the slogan "You Are Our Ore," is offering scholarships equal to the minimum wage and job guarantees to young people. Ege Maden İhracatçıları Birliği Chairman İbrahim Alimoğlu, noting that they want Generation Z's university preferences to be in engineering disciplines needed by the mining sector, stated that the mining industry promises a successful career to young people who choose one of the four engineering fields. With approval from the Ministry of Commerce, the Council of Higher Education (YÖK), and with the support of exporter associations within the Turkish Exporters Council Mining Sector Board, the mining sector is calling youth through the "You Are Our Ore" campaign to choose mining, geology, geophysics, or ore preparation engineering.

Goal: Increasing value-added in the mining sector

Ege Maden İhracatçıları Birliği Board Chairman İbrahim Alimoğlu, noting that they achieved USD 6.5 billion in exports in 2022 and generated USD 60 billion in total added value for Turkey, stated in the "You Are Our Ore" project that they partnered with İstanbul Maden İhracatçıları Birliği, West Mediterranean Exporters Association, and Eastern Black Sea Exporters Association. He emphasized their belief that if high-achieving youth choose one of the four strategically positioned engineering disciplines in the mining sector, the added value and exports that the mining sector provides to the Turkish economy will grow exponentially. Noting that minerals are used extensively in all areas of life, Alimoğlu said: "In our efforts to sustainably provide our underground resources to humanity, our young people will be immediately employed after graduation, work in production facilities, gain field experience, and advance our sector further. With a new mining approach, young people will develop our mining sector through R&D work. We hope that they will raise the bar of the Turkish mining sector in factories we operate or in factories and facilities they will establish. Young engineers will accelerate our sector's journey toward reaching a USD 15 billion export target," he concluded.

Who is eligible for the scholarship?

Scholarship eligibility criteria and amounts are as follows: 1. Candidates ranked in the top 65,000 who are placed in relevant departments of universities located in Istanbul and Ankara: ➢ Candidates placed in the top 50,000 will receive an amount equal to the net minimum wage (TRY 11,402.32 for the 2023-2024 academic year); ➢ Candidates placed between 50,001-65,000 will receive half the net minimum wage (TRY 5,701.16 for the 2023-2024 academic year) 2. Candidates ranked in the top 250,000 who are placed in relevant departments of universities located in provinces other than Istanbul and Ankara: ➢ Candidates placed in the top 100,000 will receive an amount equal to the net minimum wage (TRY 11,402.32 for the 2023-2024 academic year); ➢ Candidates placed between 100,001-150,000 will receive two-thirds of the net minimum wage (TRY 7,601.54 for the 2023-2024 academic year) ➢ Candidates placed between 150,001-250,000 will receive one-third of the net minimum wage (TRY 3,800.77 for the 2023-2024 academic year).
