'Renkli DYOloglar' Hosts Renowned Architect Nevzat Sayın

DYO's interview series 'Colourful DYOlogues', conducted in collaboration with AURA Istanbul, continues. In this interview series, it is possible to watch conversations with guests from different fields who stand out with their in-depth knowledge and broad interests. From gastronomy to travel, from philosophy to literature, from archaeology to contemporary art, from music to architecture, guests reconsider the concept of "colour" with their unique perspectives within their respective disciplines. Nevzat Sayın and Serhan Ada were guests at the fourth live broadcast of the series. In this engaging conversation, discussions took place on Nevzat Sayın's relationship with writing, his identity as a researcher and scholar, and the influence of his interest in painting, sculpture and art on architecture. In the programme, Nevzat Sayın and Serhan Ada interpreted colour from a very broad perspective. The duo, touching upon many areas ranging from geography to culture, from literature to psychology, shared the traces left by their 30-year friendship and the city they have lived in.

Sayın: "Curiosity is Yellow in Colour"

Moderator Serhan Ada asked "Does the word curiosity have a colour?", to which Nevzat Sayın replied "Yes, it is dark yellow" and said he believed that as white was added to it, the feeling of curiosity diminished. In the later moments of the conversation, Nevzat Sayın, who said that shadows first have tone and then colour, spoke as follows: "What a shadow falls on is important; the shadow has a strange power that makes invisible whatever it covers. Our relationship with daylight and shadow is very important. Olive trees have a green-grey-silvery shadow. When you enter a citrus grove in season, it is impossible not to see the orange in the shadow." Touching also on the colours of Turkish geography, Sayın said on the subject: "In the Taurus Mountains, purples and deep blues are very dominant. As you approach the Aegean, blues and greens become more pronounced. There is a very interesting difference between them, a difference that changes the colour of the entire geography." Sayın noted that he enjoys collaborating with different disciplines when designing his projects. Emphasising that he conducts extensive research before creating a project, Sayın said "In project management, 80 per cent of the work should be thinking and research, and 20 per cent should be realisation." Emphasising the importance of correctly conveying the problem and properly producing solutions in matters such as project management, construction management and design management, Sayın expressed his thoughts as follows: "In project management, a passionate desire needs to be converted into a reasonable desire. Otherwise, the architect has to do that conversion themselves, and this is quite an exhausting process for the architect."
