Tüpraş continues to develop innovative R&D technologies in line with its 2050 Carbon Neutral target and Strategic Transformation Plan. With the IS2H4C project receiving support from the Horizon Europe Programme, Tüpraş aims to reduce carbon emissions and create value for the circular economy by combining carbon capture and green hydrogen technologies. Under this project, it will strengthen sustainable refining operations and supply materials for low-carbon refrigerator production together with Arçelik. Tüpraş is accelerating its transformation process through European Union-backed projects in sustainable refining and green hydrogen. The IS2H4C project, which qualified for funding under the Horizon Europe Programme, targets circular economy transformation and aims to transition from industrial collaboration to circular economy hubs.

Tüpraş and Arçelik Partnership for Low-Carbon Refrigerator Production

In the project where demo-scale units will be implemented at the İzmir Refinery site, carbon dioxide will be captured from refinery flue gas and, using green hydrogen infrastructure, e-methanol will be produced first, followed by polyurethane. This low-carbon polyurethane will be used by Arçelik in refrigerator production. While Tüpraş assumes the role of testing and implementing innovative technologies in Turkey, the Fraunhofer Institute from Germany will work to develop the technologies in Turkey. Arçelik will also contribute to research activities and serve as the end-user of the project. Circularity Hubs and Project Contributions Under the European Union's Horizon Europe Programme, Circularity Hubs will be established in four countries including Turkey. Tüpraş will receive EUR 1.8 million in incentives with a support rate of 70%. Murat Şimşek, Deputy General Manager of Tüpraş, stated in his remarks on the project that they are working on carbon capture and green hydrogen technologies and implementing field applications. He noted that the IS2H4C project presents decarbonization solutions with a circular economy approach and contributes to Arçelik's production processes. Nihat Bayız, Deputy General Manager of Arçelik responsible for Production and Technology, stated that they create value for the country and planet through R&D capabilities and innovative technologies in line with their "Respectful to the World, Respected in the World" vision. He expressed satisfaction with participating in the IS2H4C Project and said that the project will set an example for other sectors in environmental sustainability and green transition. Tüpraş R&D Centre continues to receive European Union-backed projects. With projects currently underway, the centre, which ranks among Turkey's leading R&D centres, provides important contributions to Tüpraş on its strategic transformation journey and closely follows the most advanced technologies towards achieving carbon neutrality.
