Our Brain and Mouth Share a Strong Psychological and Neurological Connection

Üsküdar Dental Hospital Periodontology Specialist Assist. Prof. Dr. Kübra Karaduran and Üsküdar University NP Feneryolu Medical Center Specialist Clinical Psychologist Merve Umay Candaş Demir assessed the relationship between oral and dental health and mental health, within the scope of World Oral Health Day on 20 March, this year themed "A Happy Mouth, A Happy Mind."

Periodontology Specialist Dr. Assoc. Prof. Kübra Karaduran from Üsküdar Dental Hospital and Clinical Psychologist Merve Umay Candaş Demir from Üsküdar University NP Feneryolu Medical Center assessed the relationship between oral and dental health and mental health within the scope of World Oral Health Day on 20 March, whose theme this year is 'A Happy Mouth, A Happy Mind'.

Experts who emphasize that oral and dental health is of great importance not only for physical health but also for mental well-being, state that both conditions can trigger each other.

This year, the theme of World Oral Health Day on 20 March was set as 'A Happy Mouth, A Happy Mind' in order to raise awareness about how poor oral health can negatively affect quality of life and to emphasize the importance of a healthy mouth from the perspective of mental health. Within this scope, Periodontology Specialist Dr. Assoc. Prof. Kübra Karaduran and Clinical Psychologist Merve Umay Candaş Demir clarified how psychological problems affect oral and dental health and how poor oral health affects mental health.

Many oral health problems can be seen in individuals with high stress and anxiety
Dr. Assoc. Prof. Kübra Karaduran, stating that various negative effects on oral health can be seen in individuals with high stress and anxiety, said: "These conditions can lead to problems such as teeth grinding (bruxism), dry mouth and gum disease."

Karaduran, emphasizing that stress and anxiety, particularly during sleep at night, can cause teeth grinding leading to wear on teeth, jaw pain and headaches, stated: "To reduce bruxism, it may be helpful to apply daily stress management techniques. Additionally, using a night guard or protective dental appliance recommended by a dentist can also be effective in preventing bruxism."

Stress threatens oral and dental health by affecting immunity and eating habits
Dr. Assoc. Prof. Kübra Karaduran, conveying that stress can weaken the immune system and this can lead to gum inflammation, gum bleeding and more serious problems such as periodontitis, continued her remarks as follows:

"In order to balance the immune system-weakening effects of stress, great attention should be paid to oral hygiene. Brushing teeth at least twice a day and using dental floss daily are of great importance. Additionally, regular dental check-ups and professional cleanings are necessary.

Eating habits can change during stressful periods. Individuals under stress often turn to acidic, sugary and processed foods, which can cause tooth decay. Stressed individuals should prefer a balanced diet rich in fiber and fresh fruits and vegetables in order to maintain dental health. Additionally, foods containing calcium and vitamin D that support dental health as well as nutrients rich in zinc and phosphorus should be consumed."

Continuous discomfort caused by oral health problems can limit daily life!
Clinical Psychologist Merve Umay Candaş Demir, underlining that the relationship between psychological health and oral health is an important topic that is often overlooked but increasingly revealed through scientific research, said: "Our brain and mouth have a strong connection not only physically but also at the psychological and neurological level."

Demir, emphasizing that oral health is an integral part of an individual's general health, stated: "Dental and gum diseases not only cause physical discomfort but can also directly affect our mood, self-confidence and even our social life. Studies show that individuals with poor oral health have higher levels of depression, anxiety and stress. One of the fundamental reasons for this is the continuous discomfort caused by chronic oral health problems and the limitations this condition brings to daily life."

Dental health problems can be a trigger for depression and anxiety disorders!
Clinical Psychologist Merve Umay Candaş Demir, expressing that situations such as tooth loss, bad breath or gum problems can make it difficult for individuals to feel comfortable in society, warned:

"Behaviors such as avoiding smiling, hiding oneself while speaking and staying away from social environments can over time lead to loss of self-confidence and social isolation. This condition can become a trigger for depression and anxiety disorders. Additionally, individuals who avoid social interactions due to aesthetic concerns may experience difficulties in their professional and personal lives."
Maintaining oral health provides not only physical comfort but also psychological well-being...

Clinical Psychologist Merve Umay Candaş Demir, pointing out that bruxism, that is, teeth clenching and grinding habits, is one of the clearest examples of the strong connection between oral health and mental health, stated: "This condition, which is generally associated with stress, anxiety and emotional pressure, not only negatively affects oral and dental health but can also cause jaw pain and headaches. At the same time, it can negatively affect sleep quality and reduce the individual's overall quality of life. Stress management techniques, mindfulness exercises and, when necessary, psychotherapy support play an important role in controlling bruxism."

Demir, emphasizing that maintaining oral health not only provides physical comfort but also contributes to psychological well-being, concluded her remarks as follows:

"Paying attention to oral hygiene helps individuals develop self-care habits and this allows them to feel psychologically better. Daily care rituals focused on dental health can increase the sense of control in individuals thereby reducing stress levels. Additionally, a healthy mouth can boost confidence in smiling thereby reducing social anxiety.
