Desert dust particles transported through the upper layers of the atmosphere from Libya are expected to impact many provinces, notably Istanbul. According to Dr. Seha Akduman, respiratory patients should be especially cautious during this period.
Emphasizing that desert dust is not harmless, Yeditepe University Faculty of Medicine Dr. Seha Akduman drew attention to the effects of these particles on lung health.
“Desert dust does not consist only of sand particles. Research shows that these particles cause damage to cells in lung tissue and increase inflammation. Dust can carry heavy metals, pollen and microorganisms, and can reach the deepest points of the lungs through respiratory pathways,” said Akduman.

“Hidden Asthma” Risk
Noting that emergency department visits increase during periods when dust transport is active, Dr. Seha Akduman issued this warning:
“Current scientific studies show that intense dust exposure not only triggers existing respiratory diseases such as asthma and COPD, but can also create conditions for newly diagnosed asthma to develop in healthy individuals. The sensitivity and inflammation that develops in the airways can persist for weeks even after dust clouds disperse.”

Emphasizing that children, the elderly and those with heart and lung diseases should be especially careful during this period, Yeditepe University Faculty of Medicine Dr. Seha Akduman listed the precautions that can be taken on days when desert dust is active as follows:
* Keep windows closed: Limit outside air from entering indoor spaces.
* Use masks: Those who must go outside should wear surgical masks, preferably N95 masks.
* Check air conditioning settings: Air circulation in vehicles and enclosed spaces should be in internal air circulation mode rather than drawing air from outside.
* Postpone outdoor sports: Activities requiring deep breathing cause harmful particles to reach the lungs more intensely.
* High-risk groups should stay home: Infants, the elderly and those with chronic diseases should not go outside unless absolutely necessary.
