Turkish Professor Brings New Solutions to Cancer Treatment The "transparent imaging" technology invented by Prof. Dr. Ali Ertürk, supported by artificial intelligence, will bring new solutions to cancer treatment. A new technology invented by Prof. Dr. Ali Ertürk that makes entire organisms transparent and enables visualization of even a single cell with unprecedented clarity and detail has been described by one of the world's largest cancer research institutions as the beginning of a new era. Transparency technology can make cells, tissues, and entire organisms such as mice transparent, and this technology has brought new perspectives to cancer research. Thanks to this technology, tumors that would otherwise be too small to see can be detected.

Cancer Research UK States New Screening Technique Marks New Era in Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment

In a statement made by Cancer Research UK, one of the world's largest cancer research institutions, it was noted that the new screening technique carries enormous potential and marks a new era in cancer diagnosis and treatment compared to existing technologies. The statement also indicated that the new technology, which visualizes cancer cells as they begin to form, will bring significant success in the treatment of cancer at this stage, and that fewer animal experiments have been conducted while artificial intelligence has advanced the disease diagnosis and treatment to an important phase. Prof. Dr. Ali Ertürk stated in his remarks that some time ago they conducted a study in which they removed water from dead tissues using patented chemical solutions and made them "transparent," and demonstrated this on dead mice. In their latest research, Ertürk stated that they succeeded in visualizing the interior of these mice well, and noted that the method, which they named DISCO transparency, was "similar to turning milk into water." Ertürk explained: "When you look into milk, you cannot see anything. If milk suddenly became water, you could scan inside it with laser microscopes. Think of a single cancer cell. With this method, we can now visualize the cell that is beginning to form a tumor before cancer even develops."
Small Cancer Cells Can Be Detected Before They Spread
Ertürk stated that they can visualize the tissues they have made transparent in all their detail thanks to the laser they developed: "After making an entire mouse transparent, we can scan the biological systems inside it at the cellular level. This way we can visualize diseases like cancer at the cellular level and find solutions at the cellular level. Seeing and finding large cancers is not a big problem. But people usually do not die from large cancers but from small cancers at the cellular level. Once these small cancers spread through the body, they grow in different areas and can kill a person. To understand these mechanisms well, we conduct cancer research at the cellular level on mice. Our newly developed technology allows us to see cellular-level details. The imaging technologies we have developed are analyzed in detail and quickly with artificial intelligence. This way, we can now understand diseases forming cell by cell in the body and develop new treatments against them. We can see small cancer cells and thus research new solutions to eliminate them before they spread further," Ertürk said.
"I Believe We Can Find More Effective Solutions for Diseases Like Alzheimer's"
Pointing to the importance of artificial intelligence in this work, Ertürk stated: "Right now it is not very easy for us to solve brain-related diseases. We still do not fully understand the complex human brain. To achieve this, we need techniques that advance very quickly and can conduct research very rapidly. By combining our developed transparency method with artificial intelligence, we can now complete studies that could take years, perhaps in just hours. This way, we have reached a position where we can look at the causes of complex diseases like Alzheimer's, which may have millions of causes, very quickly one by one and find new and powerful solutions against them. This is why we are very excited. Our research enables us to do science very quickly, something we could not do before and was progressing slowly. I believe that by using artificial intelligence, we can in the near future find more effective solutions for complex diseases like cancer and Alzheimer's," Ertürk continued. Emphasizing that the mouse is the most widely used organism in biological research, Prof. Dr. Ertürk stated: "Genetically, there is more than 90 percent similarity to humans. However, experimenting on mice is not very easy. Results obtained with mice do not always work in humans. Drug development research takes 10-15 years and costs can reach 2 billion dollars. Developing drugs requires a lot of information. We aim to create a cellular-level map of the body on mice and transfer it to artificial intelligence," he said.
Artificial Intelligence Experts Needed
Ertürk also noted that the goal in science is to solve biological diseases, develop the best medicines and treatments by training artificial intelligence on computers without conducting excessive animal experiments. Ertürk stated: "Our aim is to understand different diseases and systems in the body, simulate them in artificial intelligence, and move toward quickly finding solutions to diseases. Achieving this is now easier." Ertürk noted that there is a need for artificial intelligence experts and recommended that young people choose fields related to artificial intelligence. At the same time, Prof. Dr. Ertürk shared that he is working on a biotechnology venture aiming to develop new treatments for diseases like cancer and Alzheimer's.
Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment Methods Will Advance on This Technology
Bilkent University Dean of the Faculty of Science, Turkish Academy of Sciences (TÜBA) Member Prof. Dr. Tayfun Özçelik also made a statement and conveyed that alumni would use the technology developed by Ertürk in cancer drug research. Noting that tissues taken in biopsy samples can now also be made transparent with this technique, Özçelik stated: "The new study marks the beginning of a new era in imaging.
