BASF Expands Biopolymer Portfolio with COSMOS-Approved Rheology Modifier Hydagen® Clean

Consumer demand for natural cosmetics is growing rapidly, driving personal care manufacturers to find environmentally friendly alternatives to proven and established solutions.

BASF now offers a natural alternative to synthetic polymers with Hydagen® Clean, a COSMOS-approved textured biopolymer. The cold-processable rheology modifier, derived from the tubers of the konjac plant native to southwestern China, is suitable for aqueous systems such as gels, liquids and serums, as well as newer formats like patches, jellies and peel-off formulations. Film-forming and gelling properties provide exceptional textures. Due to its low microbial count and rapid solubility in both cold and hot water, Hydagen Clean stands out not only for its high quality but also for its ease of use. It is suitable for skin microbiome-friendly formulations and has proven to provide instant cooling effects when used in eye patch formulations. Thanks to its versatility, the biopolymer can be used to create facial care, body care and styling products with pleasant sensory profiles.
