Dermatologist Dr. Burak Sezen stated that high glycemic index foods, packaged foods, saturated fats and excessive milk consumption can trigger acne formation. Acne; most commonly seen during adolescence, characterized by multiple clinical features including redness, inflamed pimples, cysts and scarring affecting hair follicles and sebaceous glands, is known as one of the most frequently encountered skin diseases. Dr. Burak Sezen, Dermatologist at Özel Ata Sağlık Hastanesinde, who stated that acne formation has many causes, provided important warnings. Emphasizing the need to avoid high glycemic index foods, packaged foods, saturated fats and excessive milk and dairy product consumption, Dr. Sezen stated, "Acne formation is more frequently observed in individuals with a family history of acne. Hormonal disorders (irregular menstruation, etc.), medications (excessive cortisone use, etc.), excessive smoking, use of incorrect cosmetic products, irregular sleep, stress, insulin resistance, obesity and many other factors are also important contributors to acne formation."

What Does Squeezing Pimples Lead To?

Dr. Sezen also provided information on the use of makeup products for acne-prone skin: "For acne-prone skin, oil-free, water-based products that have undergone dermatological testing and do not have excessive covering properties can be used if planned for short durations and thoroughly cleansed afterwards. One of the most important issues in acne is scarring, and scarring is usually related to the degree of inflammation. Squeezing or picking at acne can cause inflammation to spread, increasing the risk of scarring. Comedones and cysts can only be drained when deemed necessary during the treatment process under medical supervision. On the other hand, there is no direct relationship between acne and liver dysfunction. Acne treatment is important because acne can recur, cause psychological stress, and leave permanent scars. Treatment aims to correct existing acne, prevent new formations, prevent the development of spots and scars from these acne lesions, and correct any remaining scars if present."

How Is Acne Treated?

Dr. Sezen continued with information on important points in acne treatment: "Acne is a condition that should be treated by dermatologists. Acne treatment is individualized and there is no single treatment for acne. Many treatment plans are created depending on its severity and type. Treatment requires patience and consistency. Treatment plans are typically made for at least 2-3 months. During the treatment phase, topical medications (creams, gels), oral antibiotics and oral isotretinoin may be preferred. Even after acne clears, maintenance treatment should be planned. One should not listen to magazine treatments, incorrect procedures performed in beauty salons, treatment suggestions from neighbors and friends, or applications based on unreliable online sources. Additionally, these situations can make treatment difficult and lead to more acne scarring." Source
