It Is Possible to Produce Cosmetic Products from Marine Mucilage

Recently, the topic of producing cosmetic gels and creams from mucilage, which has been observed in the Sea of Marmara and is also known as sea snot, has come to the fore. Research conducted to examine the structure of mucilage shows that cosmetic products can be obtained from the flora of microalgae, which comprises approximately 60% beneficial content. The findings obtained show that the ointment produced from sea snot yields positive results on scars and calluses within 3 days. In this context, Levent Kahrıman, General Manager of Laber Kimya, emphasized that mucilage can be used as a raw material in the cosmetics sector after undergoing different procedures. As a result of the studies conducted, mucilage is progressing toward becoming a raw material for the cosmetics sector. In this context, the path will be opened for mucilage to be used in cosmetic product manufacturing. Levent Kahrıman, General Manager of Organic Operations at Laber Kimya, stated: "Algae and seaweed are already being used in cosmetics. Additionally, plankton that emerges along with mucilage can be used in cosmetics due to algae effects. The characteristics provided by mucilage have a structure similar to that of raw materials planned for use on the skin, particularly in masks, to create specific hydration and anti-aging effects. In this context, mucilage can be used as a raw material for the cosmetics sector after undergoing different procedures. Currently, algae production is not being carried out in Turkey. Imported products, however, are quite expensive. If algae production from mucilage were to be carried out, cosmetic products could be produced at lower costs," he said.

Affordable Cosmetic Production Possible with Algae Production

Pointing out that mucilage extracted from the sea cannot be used immediately, Kahrıman noted: "Mucilage has a complex structure formed by the combination of many different raw materials. The plankton and algae contained within this structure need to be separated. After they are separated, they also need to be separated from microbiotic material. Mucilage, which is a natural formation rich in organic matter, can be used in organic and vegan cosmetics in this context.
