Food and Cosmetic Products Derived from Propolis Bingöl University Pilot University Coordination Center has developed 21 products from propolis, which bees produce to protect their hives, including long-shelf-life sausage, disinfectant, cologne and soap. Selected as a pilot university by Bingöl University under the Higher Education Council (YÖK) Programme on Regional Development-Oriented Mission Differentiation and Specialization of Universities in the field of "Agriculture and Watershed-Based Development," the institution has derived 21 different products from propolis. Through research conducted in this field for approximately three years, PİKOM has processed propolis—which has very high antimicrobial value and is produced by bees to protect their hives—to obtain 21 products such as sausage, disinfectant, cologne and soap. With the help of entrepreneurs and businessmen, products whose shelf life is extended through natural methods thanks to propolis are planned to move into mass production.

Incentives for Consumption of Natural Products

Pilot University Coordination Center Coordinator Prof. Dr. Nevzat Esim, noting that work on obtaining geographical indication status for Bingöl honey is nearly complete, stated: "When we looked at activities a few years ago, beekeeping in Bingöl meant only honey came to mind. Beekeeping does not mean only honey because while honey is the most important bee product, there are also other bee products with very high economic value such as royal jelly, propolis, bee venom and pollen. We are particularly providing training to our producers on the need to produce these products as well. Through these products, we are demonstrating the potential for utilization of products other than honey." Stating that this project needs to be turned into value-added products, Esim reported that through projects being conducted on this matter, they have developed certain formulations particularly from honey, propolis, royal jelly, pollen and other products, and have obtained natural products.
