IVL and Evertis Advance Sustainable Packaging Indorama Ventures Public Company Limited (IVL), one of the world's leading sustainable chemistry companies, and Evertis, a pioneer in sustainable PET barrier films, have decided to collaborate on producing PET film suitable for food packaging containers and trays using materials derived from recycled PET trays. The partnership is viewed as an important step in diverting PET containers and trays from storage and incineration operations, aiming to support the EU's recycling targets and create a circular economy for PET trays. Following six years of research and development, Indorama Ventures produces recycled PET (rPET) materials from post-consumer trays at its Verdun facility in France. The products in question are comparable in quality to materials derived from bottles. This development supports a closed-loop economy in PET trays by offering consumers more sustainable options and enabling packaging manufacturers to meet their recycled content targets. Additionally, across the EU, it helps protect and preserve food by reducing approximately 154 million tons of food waste annually, which costs some EUR 143 billion per year. Marta Matos Gil, Sustainability Director at Evertis, stated: "PET trays are essential for providing consumers with safety and convenience, delivering longer shelf life for food, and reducing waste. Our sector has long aimed to create circular solutions for these fundamental products. Indorama Ventures' innovative recycling methods demonstrate how we can build a true circular economy by developing infrastructure and capacity to collect, sort, and recycle PET trays and transform them back into valuable raw materials. This partnership helps Evertis achieve our sustainability targets and enhance our product innovation in terms of circularity, recyclability, and eco-design. This is particularly important in today's market where our customers face new packaging regulations and consumers are mindful of the environmental impact of the products they purchase. Evertis can address both of these needs." Indorama Ventures' solution increases overall recycled PET availability through a new tray-to-tray recycling workflow. According to the company, the new recycling technology has the potential to divert more than 50 million post-consumer PET trays annually from storage and incineration. Yash Lohia, Chair of the IVL ESG Council, stated: "We can support a circular economy by conducting rigorous testing at every stage of the process, from separation and recycling through to conversion, to ensure the highest quality. Our Deja™ sustainable content brand, including rPET, supports the EU's plastic collection and recycling targets." The partnership aligns with Evertis' 2025 target supporting a goal of 50 percent post-consumer recycled content in its products. The company was recognized with RETRAY certification in 2019, which approved recycled content in film production, and earned renewal of ECOSENSE certification in 2023. Source
