8th Istanbul Carbon Summit to be held on 2 May 2023

Access to financing and the path to a low-carbon economy for climate-resilient industrial growth in Turkey will be examined at the 8th Istanbul Carbon Summit. On 2 May 2023, stakeholders will gather at Istanbul Technical University's certified green campus for the 8th Istanbul Carbon Summit, the first and only event of its kind, under the title "Climate-Resilient Industry, Strong Turkey." During sessions on Climate Finance for Climate Resilience; Carbon Management and Energy; and Carbon Management and Industry, senior executives from leading organizations will address delegates, while one-on-one interaction will be created at the exhibition. The Sustainable Production and Consumption Association's 2023 Low Carbon Hero and Small Carbon Hero awards will find their recipients.

The first and only event of its kind

The 8th Istanbul Carbon Summit, to be held under the main support of the Ministry of Environment, Urbanism and Climate Change and Istanbul Technical University (ITU), organized by the Sustainable Production and Consumption Association (SÜT-D), will be opened by ITU Rector Prof. Dr. İsmail Koyuncu. The Director of Climate Change at the Ministry of Environment, Urbanism and Climate Change, Orhan Solak, will address delegates with a speech titled "Turkey's Net Zero Target on the Path to Green Transformation." Prof. Dr. Filiz Karaosmanoğlu, ITU Faculty Member and Chairman of SÜT-D, stated: We are proud that this is the first and only event of its kind. On the 100th anniversary of our Republic and the 250th anniversary of ITU, we extend our gratitude to the business world for bringing their strength to our summit. Development banking leaders at the summit

Prof. Karaosmanoğlu stated: "Executives from Turkey Development and Investment Bank and Turkey Industrial Development Bank will table topics including sustainability management, climate finance options they provide, bond and sukuk issuance, emissions trading system, and access to sustainable finance in the 'Climate Finance for Climate Resilience' session." He noted that this session has gained particular significance prior to the utilization of the total EUR 220 million in credit newly provided by both banks for financing investments.

We will table our contributions to our country's climate resilience

"In the Carbon Management and Energy session, we will hear about renewable electricity generation from wind, solar and hydropower, electrification, e-mobility, energy management and new technological solutions, and energy and carbon trading. In the Carbon Management and Industry session, we will hear about the achievements of our industry, particularly in the chemical sector. We will table our organizations' efforts in green, circular and digital transformation in combating climate change and their contributions to our country's climate resilience."

We will applaud the Carbon Heroes

SÜT-D conducts activities aimed at imparting a sustainable living culture to children and contributing to the growth of generations that manage their carbon well, and awards the Small Carbon Hero Award. Dr. Karaosmanoğlu stated that the 2023 Small Carbon Hero award went to Koç School Social and Technological Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Creativity Club (K-STEIC), adding: "K-STEIC's 'Come On, Get Up, Look Around' Show will be a source of hope for our climate-resilient future at our summit." This year, the record number of Low Carbon Hero candidate applications from 2021 was broken. We evaluated the greenhouse gas reduction achievements of the candidates reflected in their sustainability management under the main heading, particularly in their environmental indicators, as well as in their social and governance indicators. The winners will be announced at the SÜT-D 2023 Low Carbon Hero Award ceremony at our summit.
