Abdi İbrahim Takes New Step in Sustainability

Abdi İbrahim takes sustainability step with commitment to biodegradable packaging. Abdi İbrahim has taken another significant step toward achieving its goal of becoming a carbon-neutral company by 2030. Making sustainability a priority in all domestic and international operations, the company has signed an agreement with Sabancı University Nanotechnology Research and Application Center (SUNUM) for the development of biodegradable polymers—a more sustainable and circular packaging type—for use in primary packaging of consumer health products. Under the agreement signed between Abdi İbrahim and Sabancı University Nanotechnology Research and Application Center (SUNUM), the development of biodegradable packaging, prototype production, and testing processes to verify that the produced prototype packaging meets all legal and technical success criteria sought for consumer health product current packaging are expected to be completed within 27 months. At the end of the project, the biodegradable polymer packaging produced is intended for use in products within Abdi İbrahim's existing consumer health product portfolio. Through this project, biodegradable packaging will be used for the first time in Turkey's consumer health products sector.

Goal to become a carbon-neutral company by 2030

Abdi İbrahim Public Relations and Corporate Communications Director Dr. M. Oğuzcan Bülbül stated that Abdi İbrahim is conducting numerous initiatives in line with targets set in the environmental, social and governance areas under its HEAL2030 sustainability strategy. Noting that the most important overarching target under the environmental heading is becoming a carbon-neutral company by 2030, Bülbül said: "We are taking determined and clear steps to become a carbon-neutral company by 2030. We want to be part of the green transition. We see that in the global pharmaceutical sector and in other sectors alike, the new axis in consumer preferences and global competition is now the low-carbon economy. Within the framework of the European Union Green Deal and the Circular Economy Action Plan under its roof, we anticipate fundamental and new regulations to be implemented in the coming period to make plastic packaging more sustainable and to expand the consumption of biodegradable packaging. As Abdi İbrahim, we are signatories of the Business Plastic Initiative created by Global Compact Turkey, the Association of Business and Sustainable Development and TÜSİAD. Within this framework, we are acting proactively to be part of the global green transition process, beginning with reducing plastic use. By positioning ourselves among good and responsible companies, we focus on creating the highest value in the environmental, social and governance areas for our shareholders, employees, society and environment—in short, for a more livable future. Noting that Abdi İbrahim is the only Turkish pharmaceutical company that has completed lifecycle analyses to see its carbon footprint at every stage from raw material sourcing through production, use, end-of-life and disposal, and has begun implementing projects to reduce the carbon footprint at every stage of the value chain in parallel with the targets foreseen by the Paris Agreement, Bülbül said: "Abdi İbrahim's goal is to improve the future and in doing so, to be an inspiration to both the Turkish pharmaceutical sector and other companies on sustainability." Abdi İbrahim advances with determined steps on its sustainability journey Abdi İbrahim, which prioritizes leaving a "good" mark on society and the world in which it operates while conducting economic activities, places sustainability at the center of all its operations in Turkey and abroad. Since 1 January 2020, Abdi İbrahim has used renewable electricity at its Esenyurt Production Complex and company headquarters. The company has reported to the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) in the climate change and water security categories and achieved above global average scores in its first reporting year. Abdi İbrahim released its "Social and Economic Impact" report last month and shared the results with the public. As the only pharmaceutical company in Turkey to prepare this report, Abdi İbrahim holds the position of signatory to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)—which provides and tracks carbon emission reduction targets—and the United Nations Global Compact initiative CEO Water Mandate.
