Producing Liquid Soap from Waste Oil A young entrepreneur has set out to prevent waste oil from being poured down drains, planning to implement a project where liquid soap will be given as a gift to those who bring in 5 litres of waste oil. Young entrepreneur and chemist Betül Erkuş produces liquid soap from waste oil accumulated in households, both raising environmental awareness and contributing to recycling. Trakya University Teknopark-based chemist Betül Erkuş, who conducts R&D work at a company operating within the technopark, has taken action to launch a corporate social responsibility project aimed at explaining the damage waste oils cause to the environment. Continuing her work on this subject, Erkuş explained that they have developed a new project and conducted experiments with the aim of preventing the harm waste oils cause to nature and people.
Waste oil being disposed of in landfills and water channels without proper treatment is a concerning situation, Erkuş stated, continuing as follows:
"We then thought about what we could do and began preparing a project to dispose of waste oils and transform them into new products by making solid or liquid soap. We are also aware that biodiesel is a form of recycling. On this basis, we decided to conduct a project to transform waste oil into liquid soap." Erkuş explained that since they are in the preparation phase of the project, they have not yet developed a collection system, but have conducted experiments using waste oil collected from her surroundings and offered liquid soap in return.
Transformation is the best way to dispose of waste oil
Erkuş stated that people have been quite satisfied with this approach and received positive feedback, emphasizing that the goal is to prevent people from pouring waste oil down drains where it would mix with water and soil. Stating that transformation is the best way to dispose of waste oils, Akkuş said they want to work on converting household waste oils. Providing details about the project, Erkuş mentioned that collection units will be set up in various parts of the city and announcements will be made through social media. Under the project framework, those who bring in 5 litres of waste oil will be given liquid soap as a gift.
