Düzce University Investigates Ways to Utilize Agricultural Waste

Agricultural Waste Research at Düzce University Düzce University is investigating the potential use of agricultural waste as an alternative to chemical and mechanical weed control methods currently applied by producers. Research is being conducted at Düzce University's Center for Recovery of Agricultural Waste for Industry (DÜTAGAM) under the supervision of Deputy Director and Faculty of Agriculture Lecturer Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zübeyde Filiz Arslan on a doctoral study examining the scientific applications of certain agricultural waste in weed management. As in other agricultural production areas, weeds in hazelnut orchards reduce yield and quality, complicate harvesting and create various difficulties. Due to the climatic conditions of the Black Sea Region, hazelnut orchards experience a wide variety of weed species that are widespread and densely present. To control weeds that pose problems in production, regional producers opt for chemical control using total herbicides depending on certain factors, or mechanical control using motorized scythes and cultivators. Mulching stands out as an important physical method that can serve as an alternative to other control approaches. This practice is noted as an effective weed control method and, particularly through reducing water loss in soil, an important component in crop production.

Information to be provided to producers

In the ongoing study conducted over the past two years in Düzce Central and Akçakoca districts, the effects of hazelnut husks, corn stalks and mushroom compost—the region's significant agricultural waste materials—on weeds in hazelnut orchards were observed during the spring season when weeds are abundant and the summer season when harvesting intensifies. The study also evaluates the composition of these materials and their effects on soil. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zübeyde Filiz Arslan noted that based on observations, hazelnut husks and corn stalks are effective, practical and economical applications for weed control, adding that as study results are evaluated, necessary information will be provided to hazelnut producers.
