Limak Enerji Signs Turkey's Largest Carbon Certificate Trade Deal

Carbon markets, promoted globally to encourage renewable energy use and reduce greenhouse gas emissions that cause global warming, are gaining importance in Turkey, with Limak Enerji recently executing the largest carbon certificate trade in recent years.

Limak Enerji has produced and issued VCS (Verified Carbon Standard) certificates equivalent to 5 million tons over the past 1.5 years, alone providing 50 percent of all VCS certificates issued in Turkey during this period and assuming a leading role in its sector. Approximately one-third of all VCS certificates issued since 2009 have been provided by Limak Enerji. Within the framework of the Paris Climate Agreement and the European Union's Green Deal, which aims to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, carbon markets and certification processes are expected to gain further importance globally in the coming period.

In hydroelectric, solar and geothermal energy, Limak Enerji Group earned the right to obtain VCS certificates through production at the Alkumru Dam and Hydroelectric Plant (280 Megawatt) and Uzunçayır Dam and HES (82 Megawatt), which recently qualified for Zero Waste Certification.

Limak Enerji plans to include its other renewable plants in this certification process in the coming period and aims to generate significant foreign currency for the country through this initiative. Batuhan Özdemir, Chairman of the Board of Limak Enerji, made the following remarks on the subject: "The 5 million ton figure we have reached is considered a benchmark equivalent to the amount of carbon absorbed by approximately 226 million trees in one year or the average annual carbon emissions of 1.1 million vehicles. As Limak Enerji, we aim to expand these certifications that we have initiated at our 2 hydroelectric plants and apply them to all our other renewable energy plants."   Source
