Koruma Şirketler Grubu Launches Solar Power Plant Project in Gaziantep

Koruma Şirketler Grubu's Gaziantep Solar Power Plant Project Koruma Şirketler Grubu, representing domestic manufacturing in the chemicals sector and among Turkey's largest industrial companies, is accelerating investments in renewable energy for a sustainable world. Designing all production processes with a sustainability approach to leave a more livable world for future generations, Koruma will build two Solar Power Plants (GES) in the İslahiye district of Gaziantep. Operating in the chemicals sector with various raw materials including chlorine as well as in cleaning and hygiene products, Koruma manufactures at facilities located in Kocaeli, Denizli and Hatay across Turkey. Sustainability is one of the most important priorities in Koruma Şirketler Grubu's growth targets and future vision. In line with its vision to reduce carbon footprint, Koruma Şirketler Grubu is making investments in renewable energy sources and, in addition to existing investments, will build two Solar Power Plants (GES) with a combined capacity of 43 MWp in the İslahiye district of Gaziantep. The first GES facility with a capacity of 35.5 MW to be built over an area of approximately 560,000 square meters in İslahiye is planned to generate approximately 60 million kWh of electricity annually according to simulation studies conducted. The second GES to be built over an area of more than 13,000 square meters in the same region is projected to have an installed capacity of 12.21 MW. Koruma will invest more than TRY 720 million for the installation and operation of both solar power plants. The Gaziantep GES project was also awarded the 'Efficiency Award' at the 2022 Energy-Producing Factories Summit and Exhibition.

Koruma Şirketler Grubu generates its own electricity with cogeneration systems providing up to 90 percent energy efficiency at its Kocaeli, Denizli and Hatay facilities while also meeting heating requirements. Additionally, solar panels on the rooftops of Koruma's production facilities in Kocaeli Derince and Hatay Kırıkhan benefit from renewable solar energy. Rooftop solar power plant investments have also begun at the Denizli Honaz facilities. With new solar power plant investments to be built in Gaziantep, the share of energy for production met from renewable sources will increase. Renewable energy investments support the group's environmentally responsible production targets. On the other hand, increasing the share of renewable sources in energy is of great importance for reducing high energy import dependency and closing the current account deficit. Koruma Şirketler Grubu is also implementing practices and smart technologies focused on energy efficiency in production processes. Additionally, as part of ongoing efforts to reduce carbon footprint, the company conducts greenhouse gas measurements annually and calculates carbon amounts to set reduction targets for the following year. The group manages waste meticulously at its factories throughout Turkey. In line with the goal of less waste and waste recovery, waste is separated at source and sent to licensed companies. Koruma Şirketler Grubu Chairman of the Board of Management Vefa İbrahim Aracı, in a statement marking World Environment Day on 5 June, drew attention to the importance of efficient use of natural resources for future generations and renewable energy, saying: "We do not have the luxury of postponing the steps that must be taken today to achieve the goal of a sustainable and clean world for future generations. Global warming is a serious problem and we are feeling its environmental impacts more each day. As a group whose main area of activity is chemicals, we regard it as highly important both for environmental protection and for reducing the country's high energy import figures that the energy needs are met to a large extent from renewable sources such as solar energy. We are accelerating our investments in this area. The European Union's carbon neutrality targets and the Green Deal are among the priority issues of the coming period. With our production approach compatible with the environment and people, we regard green transformation as an important part of our growth vision and are taking appropriate steps accordingly." he said.
