A New Era Begins in Energy Efficiency

TS 825 standard revision, effective from 1 April 2025, makes the use of coated insulating glass mandatory. With solar factor criteria added to the standard for the first time, it incorporates solar control into calculations.

These changes minimize heat loss in buildings, contributing to the creation of more sustainable living spaces. With the TS 825 Standard revision, which aims to limit energy consumption used for heating and cooling buildings in Turkey and increase energy savings, changes to glass systems used on building facades initiate a significant transformation in both the construction sector and the architecture and building materials fields. The requirement for coated insulating glass is expected not only to meet minimum energy efficiency requirements but also to encourage the sector to move towards more efficient and sustainable products.

Under the new regulations, with the improvement of the Upencere heat insulation coefficient from 2.4 W/m2K to 1.8 W/m2K, the use of coated insulating glass in buildings becomes mandatory. Isıcam products manufactured with Low-E and Solar Low-E glass fully comply with this transformation, reducing heat loss in buildings and opening the way for sustainable structures. With the cooling requirement clause added to the standard, it is emphasized that not only the heat insulation value of glass but also solar control values must be considered. In this context, in Turkey, which is divided into 6 zones based on climate conditions, the use of Solar Low-E products providing both heat and solar control becomes mandatory in accordance with solar control requirements specified for the first 3 heat zones. This change directly affects the processes of a wide stakeholder group from construction companies to architects. Within the scope of the new standard, informed choices regarding the types of glass used in projects gain importance.

In the TS 825 revision, the 'alterations in existing buildings' clause from the 2008 version, which referred to alterations requiring permits, is supplemented by the newly added 'not requiring building permit' provision, making the use of the standard mandatory in renovations that do not require alteration permits. Additionally, transparent sections in the building envelope such as balcony enclosure systems and roof lights are made subject to compliance with the heat and solar control criteria in the revised standard.

As a critical step towards making Turkey's construction sector more sustainable, Şişecam has played an active role in standard revision work from the beginning in relation to the TS 825 revision. While the requirement for coated insulating glass provides important direction to the sector, the inclusion of double-coated triple-glazed units in the standard indicates that the importance of triple glazing will increase in the future.
