DELO Launches Solar Cell Adhesive DELO has introduced an adhesive designed for use in solar cells. The product represents DELO's first solar cell adhesive. Light-curing materials based on acrylate or epoxy resin are particularly well-suited for bonding protective coatings on thin-film solar cells and serve as a reliable moisture barrier. Thin-film solar cells, consisting of several layers only millimeters thick, are used on building facades, lightweight roofs or load-bearing columns. The active, energy-generating layers are typically vapor-deposited onto glass or an organic carrier material and then coated with a protective film. DELO KATIOBOND LP655 is an adhesive that can be used to reliably bond protective films. The light-curing epoxy resin acts as a barrier and effectively protects the active layers from moisture. Since penetrating moisture can impair the functionality of solar cells, this property is particularly important at the edges of the surface. The adhesive was tested at +60°C and 90% relative humidity and, thanks to the raw materials used, achieves a low water vapor transmission rate of 6 g/m² in 24 hours. This prevents premature deterioration of the solar cells, contributing to the product's longer service life. DELO KATIOBOND LP655 also exhibits high peel resistance on PET, a plastic material used for protective films. The transparent adhesive, which can be cured in seconds under UV light, is optimized for slot-die coating. DELO also offers epoxy resins and various acrylate-based products for roll-to-roll processes. DELO continues to develop new adhesive solutions specifically tailored to the constantly changing technical and economic requirements of the solar energy sector. The adhesives undergo intensive testing conducted in cooperation with global development partners such as the Oninn Innovation Centre in Brazil. As a result of their multifunctional nature, DELO provides adhesive solutions not only for reliably bonding two components together but also for other renewable energy technologies, including wind energy and battery systems for electric vehicles, which perform additional tasks.
