Expert Perspective on the 90-60-90 Imposition
A slim waist, considered a sign of illness centuries ago, has become the body type adorning women's dreams in modern times.
Many women pursue various methods with the dream of having 90-60-90 measurements and looking like a model. Op. Dr. Ali Cemal Yılmaz, Specialist in Aesthetic, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, noting that women can achieve their desired appearance through aesthetic and plastic surgery applications today, shared important information about ideal body measurements, body types, and the relationship between aesthetics and health.
A slim waist is considered the most important element of grace and beauty in women. Indeed, the ideal body measurement for women, 90-60-90, has nearly become a slogan. The vast majority of women we call models have these measurements or close to them.
Many women make efforts to achieve these measurements, resorting to various diets, sports activities and of course aesthetic operations.
A Beauty of an Era: Lillian Russell
Op. Dr. Ali Cemal Yılmaz, Specialist in Aesthetic, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, says that women's interest in a slim waist goes back further in history than is commonly thought. Op. Dr. Ali Cemal Yılmaz notes that women have used corsets since the 19th century to appear slim-waisted, stating: "Although women have made efforts to appear slim-waisted, the slim waist concept of that era corresponded to the fleshy concept of today. Indeed, during those times, large-boned and full-figured women were accepted". Op. Dr. Yılmaz, expressing that the concept of fashion and the ideal female image began to change after the 1950s, said: "Until this point in time, a slim waist, large breasts, aesthetic hips and thin legs were certainly criticized and did not even come close to the boundaries of general acceptance. There were times when women weighing 90 kg were shown as ideal. As an example of this, the famous actress and singer of that period, Lillian Russell, can be cited".Model Measurements Were Packaged as 90-60-90
Op. Dr. Yılmaz, saying that ideal measurements changed rapidly after the 1950s, stated: "Through Playboy shoots and Miss World competitions, two female body shapes were presented. In the first shape, there was an ideal female image. In the second, both an ideal and a sexy image. Today, the understanding that thin women are ideal women still prevails. From the 1990s to today, ideal female and model measurements have been packaged as 90-60-90. This situation today faces the following ethical and aesthetic question: Is it possible to fit every woman into these measurements? And according to whom, according to what are ideal measurements?"Weight Gain in the Waist Area Among Women Has Increased
Research shows that, for example, in England, the ratio between women's waists and hips has increased compared to 150 years ago. Op. Dr. Yılmaz, drawing attention to the fact that this increase stems from carbohydrate and sugar consumption, continued as follows: "Increased sugar consumption leads to fat accumulation in the abdominal area. At the same time, intense stress causes women to produce less estrogen, the female hormone, and consequently fats accumulate in the waist rather than the hips, as in men. Of course, physical inactivity in modern life is an important factor."What Is the Ideal Ratio?
Op. Dr. Yılmaz emphasized that each woman's body shaping during the genetic and development process is different, and for this reason, the same measurements do not fit every woman with the same beauty. According to ideal measurement standards, Op. Dr. Yılmaz stated that a 20-year-old young woman who is 167 cm tall is expected to have a body weight of 58 kg, saying: "If she increases to 63 kg, the ideal body shape will be disrupted. At this stage, many young women will face many difficulties to remain at 58 kg, and when they reach 63 kg, they will feel fat and overweight. However, changes in the body will vary depending on nutrition, age, ethnicity, and number of births".Body Types
Op. Dr. Yılmaz, noting that every person has a genetic structure and coding, and that the general typical structure of the body is shaped according to this coding and structure, explained the 4 body types as follows.- Ectomorph: They are thin-structured individuals. Their bones are thin and long. Their muscle systems are quite minimal and weak. Their fat ratio is very low. Their body metabolism works very fast and can burn fat quickly. They should not worry about gaining fat.
- Mesomorph: They are neither thin nor overweight in structure. They have an athletic appearance. They should not remain without exercise.
- Endomorph: They are wider compared to the other two types in structure. Their bone structures are thick and their body systems tend to gain weight quickly. In general, they are types that can gain fat quickly. They should avoid excessive carbohydrate-type foods and unhealthy fats, and exercise regularly.
- Mixed: Structured individuals are generally either endomorph-mesomorph or mesomorph-endomorph mixtures. However, it is quite difficult to understand which one gains more weight here.
