Winners of the For Women in Science Program Announced The winners of the 2023 "For Women in Science Program International Awards" have been announced in the "For Women in Science" program, which L'Oréal and UNESCO have been running for over 25 years. Five female researchers honored this year were recognized by L'Oréal and UNESCO on 15 June. At the ceremony held at UNESCO's headquarters in Paris, five women scientists with exceptional careers who contribute to society through their research in Physical Sciences, Mathematics and Computer Sciences were awarded. The award ceremony also marked the 25th anniversary of the "For Women in Science" program, which promotes women's contributions to science at national, regional and international levels. The importance of this pioneering effort to ensure women's participation in science was emphasized at the awards ceremony, attended by representatives of the scientific community, universities, thought leaders, politicians, members of public authorities, organizations promoting gender equality and organizations supporting women's empowerment. The program has been operating strongly in Turkey for 21 years L'Oréal has been running the "For Women in Science" program in Turkey for 21 years in collaboration with UNESCO Turkey National Commission. In the 21st year of the program, with applications completed in 2023, four promising young and talented women scientists whose comprehensive and innovative projects contribute to scientific advancement and whose inspiring work will be recognized and each will receive TRY 150,000 in support to use in their scientific research.

Only one in three scientific researchers is a woman

In the late 1990s, women represented 25% of researchers globally. By 2014, this figure had risen to 30%. Today, one in three researchers is a woman (33%). While women occupy only 18% of scientific positions in Europe, globally only one in three scientific researchers is a woman.

The program contributes to breaking the glass ceiling in science

L'Oréal and UNESCO have been running the "For Women in Science" program on a global scale for 25 years to support women in science. The program contributes to breaking the glass ceiling in science by supporting and empowering women scientists through a specialized training program that includes coaching on effective team management, negotiation and leadership skills, as well as raising their profile and promoting their research.
Over 4,100 young women scientists have been supported to date
Under the "For Women in Science" program, more than 4,100 young women scientists have been supported to date, including 127 women who have received the international award and more than 4,000 researchers who have received scholarships. Of the 122 international rising talents who have received awards in the "For Women in Science" program, five have received the Nobel Prize in Science. Under the "For Women in Science" program, collaboration has been established with more than 50 scientific organizations worldwide. Through 52 national and regional programs organized within the program, approximately 260 scholarships have been awarded to women scientists at doctoral and postdoctoral levels in more than 110 countries.
Fondation L'Oréal Chief Executive Officer Alexandra Palt made the following statement on the subject:
"The For Women in Science program contributes to creating real transformation by opening new horizons in every discipline. We have made significant progress, but we still have important tasks ahead. The rate of women's participation in science and especially in senior positions remains very low due to gender inequality and discrimination they face. Our most important task is to encourage researchers, raise awareness and provide support."
