Talga Completes Second Commercial-Scale Graphene Coating Trial

Advanced battery anode materials and graphene additive supplier Talga Resources Ltd. announced the start of a major new large-scale commercial trial of Talcoat™ graphene additive developed for marine coatings. At the heart of the Talcoat product is a patent-pending new graphene functionalization technology in powder form that can be dispersed on-site, successfully adding graphene's exceptional strength to paints and coatings. Talga supplied next-generation graphene additive to develop primer coating successfully applied over a substantial area of a second large container vessel. Unlike the first trial (ASX: TLG 4 October 2019), the Talcoat product and 2-part epoxy-based commercial coating system were supplied separately and mixed on-site by paint applicators before spray application to the vessel during dry-dock. This represents a significant commercial advance for graphene-based products, as they typically require factory conditions or working with liquid dispersions. The coating application proved successful in meeting all conditions and standards required for vessels of this size, and confirmed the potential for Talcoat additive to be used as a ready-to-combine component for on-site assembly by paint companies or paint applicators in the same manner. To further test the versatility and compatibility of the Talcoat additive, this trial used a commercial coating system from a different global leading coating supplier than that used in the first trial. The ocean cargo vessel, approximately 225 metres long and weighing 33,000 tonnes, similar in size to the first container ship, returned to sea service and will be evaluated over the next 12-18 months with the delivered performance gains in the test area.

Talga Chief Executive Officer;

Mark Thompson: "With these large-scale coating trials ongoing on cargo vessels, we continue to take graphene out of the laboratory and into the real world. This application joins several other large-scale clean technology products we have been developing for a number of years, such as graphene-reinforced concrete, plastics and packaging products. With consideration of this Talcoat product being able to be used as an additive to various ready-to-use coatings, discussions continue with potential commercial coating and distribution partners. The company continues to pursue parallel development of both graphene coating industrial materials and lithium-ion battery anodes, leveraging synergies derived from unique high-grade Swedish natural graphite resources.
