IPF patients should continue taking their medications regularly during the coronavirus period Assoc. Prof. Funda Coşkun, drawing attention to the fact that IPF patients, who suffer from pulmonary fibrosis, are particularly anxious these days, stated: "Since there is currently no study regarding coronavirus risk specific to IPF patients, we would like to remind once again that the strict precautions taken by those with other chronic diseases should also apply to this patient group."
Coşkun emphasized the importance of IPF patients not interrupting their treatment processes during this period and continuing regular medication use.
Many people undergoing respiratory and lung treatment for various diseases are frequently consulting physicians during this period and voicing their concerns. These individuals are seeking answers to questions about whether coronavirus risk is higher due to the disease they are being treated for, or whether the treatment process will be affected. Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF), known as "pulmonary fibrosis," is among these conditions. Turkish Respiratory Research Society (TÜSAD) Board Member Assoc. Prof. Funda Coşkun emphasized the importance of IPF patients continuing their treatment processes without interruption during this period. Coşkun answered the questions most frequently posed by IPF patients regarding the coronavirus outbreak as follows:

Are IPF patients in a high-risk group during the coronavirus outbreak?

"While there is currently no study on the risk of contracting coronavirus (COVID-19) infection if you have Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (Pulmonary Fibrosis), we would like to remind once again that the strict precautions taken by those with other chronic diseases should also apply to this patient group. Based on available data, while the presence of diseases such as hypertension increases the risk of severe disease, no risk has yet been identified in relation to pulmonary fibrosis. During this period, in case of any contact, adhering to the '14 days and 14 rules,' staying at home is of great importance.

When my prescription period expires, should I visit the doctor again to get my medications?

"There is no need to worry if the prescription period for your medications expires. Until the end of June 2020, the validity of your medication prescriptions has been extended by the Ministry. You can obtain your prescribed medications directly from the pharmacy without consulting your doctor. Regular medication use is especially important during this period. You should continue taking your medications as prescribed for you."

During the prescription renewal process, I was supposed to have pulmonary function testing and diffusion testing. Can I have these tests done?

"It is not appropriate for you to undergo pulmonary function testing and diffusion testing during this period. During these tests, there is a high likelihood of particle dispersion into the environment. These tests are not recommended for both your own health and the health of healthcare workers. Therefore, there is no need for you to take any action for prescription renewal. Since your medication prescription period has been extended, you should continue taking your medications until your doctor sees you."

Does the current treatment need to be changed?

"The treatment given to you to protect your lung health and slow the progression of the disease remains valid as is. In case of any side effects, you can consult the nearest healthcare facility to you, and you can reach hospitals via telephone. We are at our posts in hospitals for you; you continue your treatment at home and stay at home."

WHAT IS IPF DISEASE?

Meanwhile, Funda Coşkun, providing information about IPF disease, stated: "This disease, which is generally seen in people over 60 years of age and more frequently in men, has a prevalence of 5 per 100,000 in Turkey. IPF may not show symptoms in early stages. Exertional dyspnea and dry cough are the most commonly reported complaints. Dyspnea typically develops insidiously and progresses. Cough is usually dry in nature and stubborn in character, and cough suppressant medications prove ineffective. Patients think these symptoms develop due to aging or tobacco use. Additionally, 30 percent of patients also show clubbing (enlarged fingertips). Beyond these complaints, fatigue, weakness, loss of appetite, and weight loss are also among the other symptoms of the disease. IPF symptoms can be confused with diseases such as asthma and COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease). In monitoring the course of the disease, tests such as pulmonary function tests, six-minute walk test, and diffusion test are also utilized. Thanks to early diagnosis, treatment can be started before advanced loss of lung function occurs."
