Kocaeli Achieves $19.2 Billion in Exports
Kocaeli was one of the cities that made the strongest contribution to Türkiye's record exports in 2022. Ranking second after Istanbul in the export league, goods produced in Kocaeli's factories saw demand from all corners of the world.
According to data compiled from the Turkish Exporters Council (TİM), Kocaeli's foreign sales, which stood at USD 17,048,148,000 in 2021, rose to USD 19,238,880,000 in 2022 with a 13% increase.
The portion accounting for 70% of the city's exports, amounting to USD 13,415,914,000, was generated by companies operating in the automotive and chemical sectors.
The automotive sector held the top position in the city's exports, hosting production facilities of Ford Otosan, Hyundai Assan and Anadolu Isuzu. Automotive exports from Kocaeli during the period reached USD 7,384,759,000, registering a 6% increase compared to 2021.
The chemical sector, with foreign sales performance up 34% compared to the previous year, came in second with USD 6,031,155,000.
The steel sector ranked third with USD 1,624,162,000, followed by ferrous and non-ferrous metals with USD 1,287,880,000 and the electrical-electronics industry with USD 822,428,000.
Exports to 183 countries and regions
From Kocaeli, which with 35 port facilities built around İzmit Bay serves as Türkiye's gateway to the world, shipments were made to 183 countries and regions last year. The United Kingdom was the top destination for exports from Kocaeli in 2022. Exports to this country totaled USD 2,174,889,000, registering a 2% increase compared to the previous year. The Netherlands, where exports from the city increased 43% compared to 2021, ranked second with USD 1,301,513,000.
