Interior paint demand is estimated to expand at 2.9% annually in line with the broader architectural paint market, reaching 535 million gallons by 2020. Growth can be attributed to positive outlooks for both new construction and sales of existing housing. As consumer confidence increases, more renovation and repair activities will take place, creating additional opportunities for interior paints. These and other trends are presented in a new study by The Freedonia Group, a Cleveland-based industrial research firm, titled Architectural Paint Market in the United States. Interior paints can be divided into various product categories such as glossy and semi-gloss paints, flat coatings, primers, and others. According to analyst Ellen Kriz, "Demand for glossy and semi-gloss paints will achieve the highest growth through 2020 at an annual rate of 3.3%. Growth will occur in these segments at the expense of flat paints because glossy and semi-gloss products are more durable, resistant to scratching, and exhibit washability properties. "While glossy and semi-gloss paints offer performance advantages compared to flat surfaces, flat paints will maintain their low-cost positioning for surfaces with low foot traffic or those not subject to significant wear and tear, such as ceilings and corridors. The formulation of low-VOC glossy paints that maintain optimum performance continues to be a challenging process.
