Opella’s Net Zero Target Approved by the Science Based Targets initiative

Opella announced that its short- and long-term emission reduction targets have been officially validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). This significant milestone confirms that Opella's climate strategy is aligned with the global +1.5°C target and the Paris Agreement, and reaffirms the company's commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions across its operations and value chain by 2050.

Opella announced that its short and long-term emissions reduction targets have been formally approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). This important milestone confirms that Opella's climate strategy is aligned with the global +1.5°C goal and the Paris Agreement, and verifies the company's commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions across its operations and value chain by 2050.

SBTi is a partnership between the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), World Resources Institute (WRI) and World Wildlife Fund (WWF). This approval demonstrates that Opella's targets are consistent with climate science and comply with the Corporate Net Zero Standard, which represents the framework for corporate net zero targets.

With this development, Opella became the first global consumer health company to both hold B Corp certification and have net zero commitments approved by SBTi. This progress is significant in reflecting Opella's deep commitment to combining scientific rigor with social and environmental responsibility.

Julie Van Ongevalle, President and Chief Executive Officer of Opella:
"Being B Corp certified and SBTi approved is evidence of how determined we are to transform our business in protecting both human and planetary health. I am proud to lead a bold team that creates meaningful change."

Marissa Saretsky, Director of Sustainability at Opella:
"Science is our compass, data is our roadmap. SBTi's approval confirms that our climate strategy is evidence-based and we are accountable in implementation. Decarbonizing our operations is vital for our long-term resilience and impact; therefore, we are proud to be part of a global movement that turns targets into action."

Feirouz Ellouze, General Manager of Opella AMET Region:
"We operate with a purpose of protecting and stewarding people and the planet—the two focuses most precious to us. As we embrace sustainable practices rooted in society and ecosystems in the Africa, Middle East and Turkey region, our targets approved by the Science Based Targets initiative guide us toward this purpose. Our teams work with determination and heartfelt commitment, shaping a healthier future for generations to come."

Using 2023 as the baseline year, Opella targets a 58.8% reduction in Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions by 2034. The company also commits to 90% absolute emissions reduction by 2050. These targets cover both company operations and carbon emissions in the value chain, and prioritize becoming carbon neutral rather than relying on emissions offsets.
Achieving these targets will also require a transformation in how Opella conducts business. Plans include procuring low-carbon raw materials, rethinking packaging designs, transitioning to 100% renewable electricity and collaborating with suppliers to set their own science-based targets. Opella will report its progress annually and regularly review its targets in line with developments in climate science.
