Industry Must Prepare for Natural Disasters

• Process Safety Discussed in Light of Earthquake Reality
• Process Safety Symposium and Exhibition Completed with Strong Attendance

The 4th Process Safety Symposium and Exhibition, organized under the theme "How Prepared is Industry for Earthquakes, Other Natural Disasters and Major Industrial Accident Risks?", was held with strong participation between 12-13 September under the coordination of Kocaeli Chamber of Industry and organized by Chem Media-Artkim Group. The seminar program hosted two panels and two sessions, and also featured four special speakers. The 4th Process Safety Symposium and Exhibition, held at the Kocaeli Convention Center, was visited by a total of 1,843 people. Visitors gained access to the latest technologies in the exhibition area featuring 41 participating companies, and had the opportunity to receive interactive training through 8 separate workshop programs. Hasan Şerefhan, Chairman of the Process Safety Symposium Executive Board, emphasized the importance of digitalization in process safety. Şerefhan stressed that integrating new technologies into process safety would be effective in reducing risks. Cengiz Yaman, Founder and CEO of Artkim Group, stated that the Process Safety Symposium provided a unique opportunity to access the views and opinions of sector managers and scientists, and said they believed this symposium would contribute to the improvement of process safety in our country. Hasan Tahsin Tuğrul, Chairman of the Kocaeli Chamber of Industry Board, recalled the importance of Kocaeli to the country's economy and provided information about the projects and work they have undertaken.

Earthquake Reality: Disaster and Emergency Plans in Industry

The symposium program began with a special presentation by Prof. Dr. Şerif Barış, Faculty Member at Kocaeli University and Earthquake Specialist. In his presentation, Barış examined the subject of Disaster and Emergency Plans in Industry, providing information with examples on measures that should be taken. Prof. Dr. Şerif Barış also noted that the supply chain should be included in Disaster and Emergency Plans due to disruptions experienced during major disasters.

Japanese Expert Moriwaki Shed Light on Necessary Measures

In his special presentation, Japanese Earthquake Specialist Yoshinori Moriwaki addressed differences between Japan and Turkey in disaster prevention. Particularly emphasizing the importance of seismic isolators that flex under earthquake impact and dissipate the resulting energy, Moriwaki noted that these systems are found in only some hospitals in Turkey, while they are frequently used in hospitals as well as schools and public institutions in Japan. Moriwaki also stressed that in Japan, organizational preparedness is designed to encompass government, state agencies, schools and companies, and that training and drills are conducted very seriously.

Solutions Sought for Risks Created by Natural Disasters

In addition to special speakers, this comprehensive two-day event also featured two sessions and two panels. Within the framework of the panel titled "How Prepared is Industry for Natural Disasters and Industrial Accident Risks? What Should Be Done to Manage These Risks?" moderated by Kocaeli Chamber of Industry Board Chairman Hasan Tahsin Tuğrul, in addition to earthquakes, other natural disasters such as fires and floods were discussed with examples from experience gained by expert speakers and sector managers, and measures to be taken were debated. In addition to natural disasters, Tuğrul drew attention to risks that could be created by hazardous materials and high-pressure systems used particularly in the chemical, oil, gas and energy sectors, emphasizing the necessity for enterprises to place special importance on the human factor in their risk management processes.

The 4th Process Safety Symposium and Exhibition was supported by the T.R. Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change and the T.R. Ministry of Industry and Technology, as well as 30 industrial organizations and 18 civil society and media organizations.
