Tosçelik Spiral Boru wins "Rhine Water Pipeline" tender
Tosçelik Spiral Boru, a successful company of Tosyalı, Turkey's global steel producer and Europe's largest pipe manufacturer, has won the tender for the "Rhine Water Pipeline" (RWTL) project.
One of Germany's most important environmental transformation projects, this initiative aims to bring water from the Rhine River to fill disused open-pit mines. As part of this project carried out by RWE, one of Germany's leading energy companies, Tosçelik Spiral will supply a total of 130,000 tons and 105,600 meters of large-diameter pipes measuring 2235mm. Last week, Tosyalı and RWE Power signed a contract at Paffendorf Castle, RWE's convention center near Cologne.
Tosyalı Board Chairman Fuat Tosyalı said the following regarding the agreement: "As Europe's largest green steel pipe producer, this project has special significance for us. As Tosyalı, we prioritize sustainability-focused investments at every point of our production; we allocate substantial resources to green transformation technologies. Therefore, when a project with high environmental sensitivity like the Rhine Water Pipeline was announced, we felt particular excitement about being part of this project with our low-carbon steel pipes."
RWE Power's CTO, Dr. Lars Kulik, stated: "For our project, we need large, high-quality pipes that will transport water from the Rhine River to mining lakes for decades to come. Another focus of our tender was the producer's environmental approach. We are very satisfied that Tosyalı, with its sustainable vertically integrated production structure from raw materials to finished products and the highest technologies used in production, is our partner. With their support, we will transform open-pit mines into sustainably attractive lakes for the benefit of future generations."
Tosçelik Spiral Boru, a successful company of Tosyalı, Turkey's global steel producer, and one of Europe's largest spiral pipe manufacturers, continues to grow by participating in new projects through agreements it has reached, while continuing to contribute to the green transition initiated under the EU Green Deal in many countries across Europe.
Tosyalı to Supply the 130,000 Tons of Spiral Pipes Required for the Project Independently
Tosyalı, advancing toward becoming one of the world's leading carbon-free, green steel producers through sustainability-focused investments, continues to draw attention as a pipe supplier for new projects in line with this mission. In this context, the group's spiral pipe company Tosçelik Spiral Boru recently won the "Rhine Water Pipeline" (RWTL) tender.
A Green Transformation Bridge to Germany
RWE, Germany's energy production company, will cease operating coal-fired power stations and open-pit mines by 2030. Through this project, the company will reprocess disused open-pit mines in Garzweiler and Hambach, transforming them into lakes. For this purpose, the company will pump water through pressurized pipes laid underground along a 45 km route from the Rhine River near Düsseldorf and Cologne. In this way, old open-pit mines will not only be returned to nature, but also clean water will be provided to protected wetland areas and the regional groundwater table will be stabilized.Tosçelik Spiral Pipes Made from Green Steel Will Be Used in the Project
Tosyalı, which has agreed to be the supplier in this investment carried out by RWE as part of its green transformation, carries out steel production with the lowest carbon footprint in the sector. By making sustainability-focused investments at its facilities in Turkey and Algeria, Tosyalı is among the world's leading pioneers in green steel production through its investments in clean energy sources such as solar and hydrogen. With its solar power system project, which it implemented in Turkey with simultaneous investments across all its facilities, Tosyalı reached an installed capacity of 235 MW, making it the company with the world's largest rooftop solar power system. Through this project, it also prevented approximately 171 million kg of carbon emissions, becoming one of the world's most environmentally conscious steel producers. Tosyalı is also investing in hydrogen, the energy of the future, with next-generation technologies. The second DRI production facility implemented with MIDREX technology in Algeria will be capable of operating with 100% hydrogen. With these sustainability-focused investments, Tosyalı produces the world's greenest and most environmentally friendly steel with the lowest carbon footprint globally. Green steel pipes produced by Tosyalı with sustainability focus will be used in this meaningful investment by RWE for green transformation. The project, which involves the construction of a three-branch steel pipe line over approximately 45 km, is planned to begin construction by the end of 2024 and to be completed by the end of 2029.Advertisement
