SOCAR Türkiye and Siemens Forge Strong Partnership: Petkim's Energy Infrastructure Modernized

Siemens Türkiye and SOCAR Türkiye took a step toward cooperation in 2017 for the modernization of Petkim's energy infrastructure and signed a 5-year agreement in 2021. Within the scope of the project, the modernization and electrical infrastructure of a total of 18 plants have been completed since 2017.

Siemens Turkey and SOCAR Turkey began a collaboration in 2017 for the modernization of Petkim's energy infrastructure, and in 2021 concluded a five-year agreement. Within the project scope, the modernization and electrical infrastructure of a total of 18 factories have been completed since 2017.

The jointly executed project by Siemens Turkey and SOCAR Turkey commenced with the energy infrastructure replacement at 15 main facilities of Petkim in Aliağa and was completed through a process encompassing the modernization of a total of 18 factories. During this period, significant steps were taken including the replacement of approximately 150 medium-voltage (MV) switchboards, the renewal of low-voltage switchboards and SCADA systems. Siemens' global expertise in engineering and digitalization reinforced confidence in the project.
Additionally, within the scope of the Petkim Electrical Health Check project, implemented for the first time in the petrochemical sector through the collaboration of Siemens Turkey and SOCAR Turkey in 2024, Petkim's electrical systems were analyzed in detail to identify future investment requirements. The analyses conducted in this context directed the modernization process, enabling the infrastructure to become safer and more efficient.

Leading Steps in Digitalization and Sustainability
Siemens Turkey Board Chairman and CEO Hüseyin Gelis, regarding the project, stated: "This collaboration we carried out with SOCAR Turkey, in addition to modernizing Petkim's energy infrastructure, contributed to the important steps taken to date on the path of sustainability and digitalization. Through digital transformation processes, SOCAR Turkey's production efficiency increased further while environmental impacts were reduced."
Cengiz Bozbey, Country Manager of Siemens Turkey's Electrification and Automation Division, said: "In facilities that have been operating for 60 years, modernization needs naturally arise over time. In particular, the new requirements of energy infrastructure, and the necessity to eliminate production losses and environmental risks according to present conditions, formed the basis of this collaboration. In today's environment where digitalization is reshaping the sector, through our SCADA systems and modern energy solutions, thanks to the work we have carried out at Petkim, we have contributed to raising efficiency, occupational health and safety standards, and with Siemens technologies, we have helped make SOCAR Turkey's petrochemical production processes smarter and more reliable."

A Partnership Growing Together and Building the Future
During the project period, Siemens contributed at every stage of Petkim's energy infrastructure, a group company of SOCAR Turkey. Through its technological solutions, Siemens minimized energy losses while enhancing safety, and throughout all processes paid attention to occupational health and safety standards. During this period, over 500 personnel worked on site contributing to the project.
In a statement regarding the collaboration, Kanan Mirzayev, Head of SOCAR Turkey's Refinery and Petrochemistry Business Unit and General Manager of Petkim, said: "Within SOCAR Turkey, Turkey's largest integrated industrial group, our group company Petkim signed a sustainable collaboration with Siemens. Petkim, Turkey's first and only integrated petrochemical company, and for approximately 60 years an indispensable raw material supplier to the industry, additionally supports sustainable development through our environmentally friendly production processes and energy efficiency investments. This collaboration we carried out with Siemens became one of the finest examples of this vision. The steps we have taken together on the journey of sustainability and digitalization serve as an example not only for two companies but for the entire sector."
