In recent years, the sector has undergone significant transformation driven by both consumer demand and regulatory requirements, particularly managing the preparation process for GE (Glycidyl Ester) and 3-MCPD contaminant regulations that will come into full force in Turkey from 2026 onwards. These regulations cover not only plant-based oils placed on the market, but all food products manufactured using these oils. Experts highlight the critical issue at this point: How can production be achieved that is both trans fat-free and fully compliant with new legislation?
Solution: Naturally Stable Oil Formulations
Experts note that hydrogenation is the fundamental cause of trans fat formation, and plant-based oils that are naturally semi-solid at room temperature address this need. Palm oil stands out particularly because it can provide the desired texture, consistency and durability in products without requiring chemical hardening.
The most important factor differentiating palm oil is tocotrienols, naturally present in its composition and known as a potent form of vitamin E. These compounds make the oil more resistant to oxidative degradation while preventing trans fat formation.
Scientific Data Confirms This
Research published by the University of Malaya demonstrates that tocotrienols naturally present in palm oil maintain their stability even during high-temperature processing, preventing trans fat formation and extending shelf life. This allows manufacturers to maintain the balance of flavor and freshness in products without requiring chemical intervention.
Reduced Need for Additives
According to food scientists, another reason for preferring naturally stable oils is their resistance to oxidation. This both reduces the need for additives and aligns with the "clean label" concept. When considering the GE and 3-MCPD limits coming into effect in 2026, the safety of both raw oil and final product can be more easily ensured through this natural stability.
Experts emphasize that consumers increasingly want to see simpler and safer ingredient lists, noting that the sector is responding to this expectation by streamlining production processes and raising inspection standards.

Industry representatives state that trans fat-free products will cease to be a differentiation factor in the near future and will become a mandatory production standard. Naturally stable plant-based oils are identified as among the key factors making this transition technically feasible.
