Shinier and Healthier-Looking Hair: ProShine – 100% Plant-Based and Biological Silicon Alternative from Chemyunion*
Shine is a fundamental characteristic for healthy-looking hair and, as one of the most sought-after consumer needs, represents an important part of success in developing hair care products. Following the "natural/plant-based" criterion, the "shine-enhancing" claim is the most sought-after criterion generally in products launched for this category, and according to research conducted on the Mintel GPND platform, this claim accounts for approximately 40% of all hair care product launches since 2012.
Shiny hair is considered healthy, and hair shine can be affected by several factors: ultraviolet (UV) radiation, heat treatments, chemical treatments (such as bleaching and straightening), and even frequent brushing.
The components currently used in hair care products in the cosmetics market to increase shine are: plant oils, plant extracts and silicones. Although plant oils and extracts come from renewable sources, they have weak interaction with the hair shaft, creating only surface-level and short-lasting shine, and are easily removed from hair with water and shampoo. Additionally, plant oils can weigh down hair and give it an oily appearance.
Silicones are also widely used, with the most common being phenyltrimethicone, cyclomethicone, dimethicone and aminopropyl phenyltrimethicone. These products have low biodegradability and are obtained through chemical reactions involving chlorinated petrochemical-origin compounds (a non-renewable resource). In addition to their bioaccumulative properties, they weigh down hair and make styling difficult.
Currently, the cosmetics industries are searching for more sustainable and biodegradable alternatives for developing and manufacturing hair-shining cosmetic products. Additionally, the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Green Chemistry concept is directing the search for alternative options, highlighting attention to producing products that do not harm humans and the environment.
Based on the fundamental principles of "Green Chemistry," to meet this challenging market demand, Chemyunion developed ProShine, composed of 100% plant-based esters with a high refractive index that enhances hair color vibrancy and provides intense shine when it interacts with hair. ProShine was developed based on molecular structure research, taking into account three essential properties required to achieve good hair shine performance: refractive index, reflection index, and intermolecular interactions between chemical functions found in molecules and the hair cuticle. This product was developed to have a high refractive index, an important factor in increasing light reflection on hair. ProShine has a higher value compared to other ingredients, with a refractive index of 1.4790.
In the efficacy test results (Figure 2), it was observed that pure hair strands treated with ProShine showed a significant 19% increase in shine values compared to hair strands before treatment.

Based on the results indicated in Figure 3, it was observed that bleached hair strands treated with ProShine application showed a significant 127% increase in shine values compared to hair strands before treatment.
