Aygaz Publishes 2023 Sustainability Report

Aygaz, Turkey's leading LPG company, has released its 2023 Sustainability Report. The report notes that as global temperatures reach record levels, the fight against climate change has become increasingly important, and Aygaz commits to reducing Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 50 percent across all facilities by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
Believing that social and cultural development is necessary for a sustainable economy, Aygaz continues to contribute to societal development through investments and social responsibility projects in areas such as gender equality, history, culture and arts, environment, health, sports and education, alongside economic initiatives. As the first company in Turkey to publish a sustainability report in 2002, Aygaz has shared its 2023 Sustainability Report with the public, which encompasses the practices and projects it has implemented based on this understanding as well as its climate change mitigation targets.
The report, which outlines company targets ranging from emission reduction goals to gender equality, renewable energy investments to energy efficiency, hydrogen, biogas and other low-carbon energy sources to LPG investments in developing countries, was prepared in accordance with Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Standards "core" option.
The report notes that Aygaz ranked 25th on the Istanbul Chamber of Industry's (İSO) 2023 list of 500 Large Industrial Companies, holds a leading position with a 41.1 percent market share in the bulk LPG segment and a 22 percent market share in the autogas segment, and achieved consolidated revenue of TRY 64.8 billion at the end of 2023.
Regarding Aygaz's growth strategies abroad, the report states that United Aygaz LPG, established in Bangladesh, has reached sales of 59,000 tonnes and storage capacity of 11,000 tonnes, with capacity expansion and new investments planned.
Targets set for climate change mitigation
According to the report, having determined its sustainability targets, Aygaz commits to reducing Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 50 percent across all facilities by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, in line with Koç Holding's 2050 carbon neutrality commitment.
The company also positions LPG, which plays an important role in the energy transition process, as a transition fuel to a low-carbon economy due to its advantages including mobility, storage convenience and lower emissions compared to conventional fuels. LPG, viewed as a directly applicable and accessible energy source, is noted to be an important component of the energy mix during the transition period.
Among the company's targets listed under "Social Responsibility," its commitments to achieving gender equality include a goal of providing technology, innovation and entrepreneurship training to 100,000 women by 2026.
Significant savings in electricity and natural gas through energy efficiency projects
Within the scope of Major Energy Efficiency Projects implemented in 2023, Aygaz, which places efficient use of natural resources at the center of its sustainability strategy, is implementing projects aimed at continuously improving its environmental performance and minimizing environmental impact from operations. According to the report, through work carried out in this scope, Aygaz achieved savings of 440 MWh of electricity and 235,000 m³ of natural gas in 2023 at Aygaz Filling Plants and the Gebze Facility, resulting in financial gains of TRY 4.2 million.
Aygaz installed solar energy systems on the roof of the Gebze Facility Administration Building, and through this project, which compared different panel technologies to provide the most suitable solution, produced 57,000 kWh of solar energy at the Gebze Facility in the previous year. The Manisa Solar Plant project, which completed approval processes for renewable energy source investments in line with the Carbon and Energy Transition strategy, will supply 2,900 MWh of energy needs from solar with an installed capacity of 1.59 MW. The report also notes that the company is continuing discussions for new solar plant investments.
SOx emissions from LPG reduced by 65 percent with GreenOdor
The report highlights the increasing importance of LPG and other alternative fuel products with lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil fuels in the transition to a low-carbon economy, and notes that Aygaz has developed new products and services aimed at reducing environmental impacts from both production and use. The report states that following four years of R&D and three years of product development work, GreenOdor, a sulfur-free LPG odorant, began being used at Aygaz terminals and facilities in 2022. Through the use of GreenOdor, which provides lower emissions, reduced chemical use and cost advantages compared to conventional odorants, SOx emissions from LPG were reduced by 65 percent in 2023.
