10 BENEFITS OF A SINGLE GLASS OF MINERAL WATER
Do Not Consume More Than 2 Bottles Daily
During oppressive summer heat, mineral water provides numerous health benefits in addition to cooling relief. Şengül Sangu Talak, Nutrition and Dietetics Specialist at Acıbadem Altunizade Hospital, reminded of key points to observe in mineral water consumption. "Since mineral water contains high levels of salt, restrictions should be applied based on individual conditions for hypertension patients, those with kidney disease and pregnant women. Healthy individuals should not exceed 2 glasses per day," said Nutrition and Dietetics Specialist Şengül Sangu Talak, who identified 10 benefits of mineral water. Talak explained the differences between soda and mineral water, which are commonly confused in public discourse; and provided important warnings and recommendations. When consumed regularly, mineral water has the effect of improving bone health. It is also effective in preventing diseases such as post-menopausal bone density loss (osteoporosis) seen in women. At the same time, it protects muscle performance through its magnesium content. Scientific studies have demonstrated that mineral water has a cholesterol-lowering effect on bad cholesterol thanks to its magnesium and potassium content. Through its sulfate content, mineral water increases amylase secretion from the pancreas and aids digestion, particularly after heavy meals or when meals have been skipped. Mineral water, with its rich mineral content, helps protect skin health; moisturizes the skin and delays wrinkles. Nutrition and Dietetics Specialist Şengül Sangu Talak notes that "mineral water helps reduce inflammation related to rheumatism and arthritis." Through the electrolytes it contains—bicarbonate, chloride, potassium and sodium—mineral water prevents dehydration and assists water absorption. Studies have also shown that it has a kidney stone risk-reducing effect by lowering calcium oxalate concentration. Electrolytes are present in body fluids; they ensure the regular functioning of heart, nerve and muscle functions. For this reason, on hot summer days when we lose fluids through perspiration, mineral water stands out as a healthy choice for replacing electrolyte losses. Through the bicarbonate, chloride, potassium and sodium it contains, it is possible to recover lost minerals. Through its magnesium content, mineral water provides significant benefits against fluid and electrolyte loss during and after exercise. Mineral water prevents muscle cramps and maintains performance. Mineral water, thanks to its rich magnesium content, helps regulate high blood pressure. It is known that in a hypertension patient consuming 1 glass of mineral water daily, blood pressure decreases to normal levels. Nutrition and Dietetics Specialist Şengül Sangu Talak states that "through its magnesium content, mineral water increases the sensitivity of the insulin hormone, thereby contributing to blood sugar balance."Mineral Water and Soda Are Different Beverages!
Nutrition and Dietetics Specialist Şengül Sangu Talak notes: "Mineral water and soda, which are frequently confused with each other in our society, are actually different beverages. Soda is created by adding carbon dioxide and sodium to any potable water. While soda contains no rich minerals other than sodium, mineral water is extracted naturally or by appropriate methods from various layers of the earth and has a balanced mineral composition. Furthermore, carbonated beverages marketed as flavored soda should not be consumed as they may contain artificial additives, colorants and artificial sweeteners. Instead of flavored soda, a refreshing alternative for summer months can be obtained by adding freshly squeezed fruit juice or fresh fruit pieces to mineral water for natural flavor. However, attention should be paid to the amount of fruit juice added from an energy perspective. The mineral water, which is calorie-free, should not be converted into a high-energy beverage," she states.Advertisement
