4th Istanbul Design Biennial – School of Schools

Akbank Sanat, One of Six Venues Hosting the 4th Istanbul Design Biennial Between 22 September – 4 November 2018

The 4th Istanbul Design Biennial, organized by İKSV under the title Schools School, examines design as a learning method and learning as a design method. Running from 22 September to 4 November, the biennial will adopt a multi-platform structure that employs, tests and reviews various educational strategies to reflect on the role design, knowledge and global connectivity play in present-day Istanbul and beyond. Schools School brings together practitioners, educators and thinkers from Turkey and abroad over six weeks across six distinctive venues, creating a shared space for dialogue and production. Curated by Jan Boelen, the biennial presents old knowledge alongside new knowledge, academia with an amateur spirit, professionalism with personal experience. The 4th Istanbul Design Biennial will be spread across six venues in Beyoğlu. Each venue will focus on one of six schools united under the title Schools School: Unmaking School at Akbank Sanat, Currents School at Yapı Kredi Kültür Sanat, Scales School at Pera Müzesi, Earth School at Arter, Time School at SALT Galata, and Digestion School at Studio-X İstanbul. Unmaking School at Akbank Sanat examines how humanity's relentless creative instinct shapes world balances across a spectrum ranging from production to business and urbanization. Projects and events in Unmaking School question both old and new mapping techniques as well as site-specific production methods.
